@SagHarborBride:  The short answer is you’re free to ignore peoples’ requests and do the seating chart which works best. Your mother had no right to promise someone a seat at her table.

Try to put everyone near someone they know, and keep people who hate each other (e.g. divorced couples) apart. So long as you do that, everyone will be reasonably happy.

Here’s what we did: The two closest tables were the two immediate families, plus some very close friends/relatives. After that, family was sat together and friend groups were sat together. Where a group didn’t fill a whole table, we tried to seat them with another group of roughly the same age.
