Fiance & I originally planned on doing cupcakes…oh, how I adore cupcakes. My brother offered to pay for our cake (or cupcakes when that was our plan) so we definitely wanted to be price conscientious. We were able to find a cheap baker, a lady that does cakes out of her home (a non-issue for us as she came highly recommended). Her price is right & I do love our wedding cake design (sorry for the crappy quality):
But I’m second guessing that fact that the flavors are nothing fancy. She only does basic yellow or chocolate cakes w/ fresh fruit fillings. She uses all whipped cream frosting which is great for us, we hate buttercream. We’re doing 5 cakes: 4 yellow cakes w/ 1 lemon, 1 strawberry, 1 peach & 1 pineapple/walnut & 1 chocolate cake w/ raspberry. We’ve had a couple taste testings & we really like her baking.
I’ve always heard, “Everyone always goes to a wedding for the cake. The cake is SO important”; I’m starting to feel embarrassed because I know our cakes aren’t anything great…but we love them.
How big of a deal is the cake? Am I being ridiculous?

I think your cake flavors are great. You could always ask her if she would be willing to do some other flavors for you, but that might drive the price up.
I have never heard that guests go to wedding for the cake. I have always heard that it is to celebrate the union of the couple into marriage.

I wouldn’t worry about the flavors of the cake. We’re doing very simple flavors (almond and chocolate). The cake will be delicious no matter the flavor and there’s SO many more important reasons people go to a wedding besides cake 🙂

I think your cake choices are great too! Fresh fruit filling….yummmm. Buttercream is my favorite frosting though, but I’d be more than happy with your choices. Designer choices don’t necessarily mean better. I’d just hope to be sitting with people I know so I can taste the various choices. Best wishes.

I think it’s smart to have simple flavors, there’s a bigger chance more people will like it.

Thanks ladies for making me feel better about this. I know it’s not a main focus of a wedding, but still…
