My FI are in such debate on what hotel to choose from for our honeymoon: Secrets Maroma Beach, Excellence Playa Mujeres or Royal Playa del Carmen. What do you bees think? I want all pros and cons for those who have stayed at one of these resorts or any other suggestions for another hotel….

I stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen for a girlfriends wedding last summer. It was such a great time! Definetly one of the best resorts I have ever stayed at. However, if you are looking for a quiet/intimate honeymoon, im not sure if this is the place. There is always entertainment, even by the pool during the day and people busy doing something. It is definetly a great resort for groups and perfect for a wedding, but my girlfriend and her new hubby went to another resort for their intimate honeymoon. The food is amazing, plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from and something to do everynight. The rooms are pretty great too. All in all, it is a fabulous hotel. I am looking at Excellence Playa Mujeres for my wedding actually, it looks amazing! I too am looking for some personal experience advice. Hope this helps…good luck!!

We’re staying at Excellence Playa Mujeres! It seems like someone posts a great review almost daily on TripAdvisor. I researched our honeymoon to NO END- and I’m thrilled with our choice!

Ok, first check all the reviews, pictures, and the forums on Trip Advisor if you have not already done so.
Secrets Maroma Beach- It’s sort of the consensus that Secrets Maroma Beach has the best beach on the Mayan Riviera (with the possible exception of the non-resort beaches in Tulum). This resort is not very close to anything. Even if the address is Playa del Carmen, it is not directly in PDC. You may feel “stuck” on the resort if you are the type that likes to wander about. However, I think they may have a shuttle, and in any event, it isn’t difficult to get taxis if you want to go into town.
The Royal PDC- This resort is right off 5th Ave. in Playa del Carmen. So you are actually in the town, on the main street. Some people really like this b/c there is a lot of stuff within walking distance of the resort.
Excellence- Don’t know too much about this. I think I’ve heard that the water can be a bit rough and isn’t really that blue-green? But I could be mistaken about that. Playa Mujueres is supposed to be a really neat island and lots of people take golf carts and tour around.
All of these resorts have great reputations, so it is just a matter of what you are looking for. Have fun!

The beach at Secrets Maroma is fantastic. We have some photos of it on our Facebook page.
Royal Hideaway is also nice, but I found it to be a tad stuff. You can also find photos of it on our Facebook page.
Of the three, I would go with Excellence Playa Mujeres. The two story rooftop suits are fantastic!
I am a huge fan of El Dorado Royale though. The food is to die for, and it’s very easy to get Playa and the excursions in area. I’ve stayed there twice within the last year. It’s my favorite resort in Mexico.

Such a difficult choice. Secrets Maroma really does have an amazing beach and the service you get at Secrets resorts in incredible – the food is so good too. But The Royal is a top notch resort as well – my coworker stayed there a couple of years ago and raves about it. Maybe see what deals you can get and if the price difference helps the decision!

We just returned from Excllence Playa Mujeres, where we had our 10-day honeymoon and loved every minute of it! I can’t say enough good things about the accomodations, food and service. All were incredible. We went to Sandals last year on vacation and really liked it but decided to try Excellence for the HM since a friend spoke so highly of it. Well let me tell you — it blew Sandals out of the water!! Food and service were both way better… pools were much cleaner, etc. I woulud go back to EPM in a heartbeat. In fact, we’re already talking about a first anniversary trip! 🙂 Hope this helps and feel free to email me directly if you have any specific questions. I do recommend reading up on it on Trip Advisor as that helped us decide and the reviews of EPM were dead on.
