Oh! I'm pasty too! Aveeno makes a self tanner with a dial type thing at the top with like, 5 different shades. So you can start and #1 (like I did) if you're afraid you'll look ridiculous, and gradually dial it up.
I have no luck with self tanners -- they always streak! Some people swear by the gradual tan one (I think it's by Dove?).
I do tan if I do it gradually in the sun, but our e-pics are on Saturday and I'm pasty white (and I get a yellow-white color, it looks like I'm sick!).
I just went to Hollywood Tans tonight to try their mystic tan. Waiting to see how it develops... Let's hope I have tanned legs for those pics!
Oh yea, I've tried the gradual tanner by Jergens and I find that after the first couple applications (using it every other day), it starts to look a little orange and kind of rub off (ew). Try the Aveeno! Here's a pic: http://www.glam.com/blogs/the_it_lists/aveeno_dialatan_theitlistscom
I swear by Clarins. Seriously- this stuff is amazing. Very natural, NOT orangey and very easy to apply. I am a very pasty-white asian person and the Clarins was recommended to me by a beauty dept gal at Nordstrom. I've been really happy with it...

I am all about Tan Towels
They don't smell. They are just like a Wet Wipe but after you wipe your entire body you begin to see color, pretty color...They are brilliant!

Personalized spray tan. This is coming from a reformed tanorexic. I have tried every self tanner from Dior to the dollar store. MyMyst by Mystic Tan is just okay in my opinion. I actually searched online and found a Tan Envy rep in my area. Lexi(my tanning pro) actually comes into my house and sprays me. Overall the cost is about equal to all the crap I've purchased in the past. Plus nobody expects my glow is faux. www.tanenvy.com
Good luck!
St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse is phenominal! You can see the color going on....I did it for my wedding and it turned out perfect.
I second the Tan Towels that jackie-o mentioned. They are fabulous, I use them once a week and have maintained a nice, natural looking glow all winter long. And they are inexpensive!
I like L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Tinted Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. It gives nice color and has less of a tendency to streak than other drugstore options I've tried. Another budget-friendly product I love is Bonne Bell bronzing gel. It's a bronzer, not a self-tanner, but it's super cheap and gives nice color. It's intended for your face, but I've used it on my arms and legs in a bridesmaid pinch and it actually stays put and looks natural.
Good luck!
I like the L'Oreal Sublime Tanning Lotion as well - I used it on my body and face. Smells fairly strong in my opinion (not a bad smell, just a definite self-tanner smell, if that makes any sense). I've never had streaks or looked orange-y with it. I was excited because I found it for really cheap at a local Marshall's yesterday!
I may check out tan envy!~sounds good.
I have used the self tanner from Bath n Body Works True Blue Spa line called "Strike Gold" and I think it works great. I also mix it w/a touch of body lotion (passport tahiti) and it smells great and goes on evenly. Did it today before church so my legs would look ok without hose wearing a dress!
A long time ago, I used to use the coppertone and Loreal self-tanner, but of course ended up with darker splotches in some area or turned a little orangy. Now, I just use the Jergens lotion with a touch of self tanner. You aren't going to turn super dark or anything with it, but it really gives you a nice glowy, subtle tan. Anyway, that's what I like using.
I use Jergens Natural Glow Firming lotion. I haven't really been out in the sun for the last couple of years and I really want some color for the wedding. It works really well.
I got a spray tan for my wedding and I LOVED it. It was only $35 for the whole body and it lasted a good two weeks - probably will last longer if you take extra care of it. Good luck!

I am white, really pasty white. Sitting outside with a tanning oil on won't do a thing for me, I reflect the sun I swear.
So I need a safe and effective way to get tan. Oh, an economical, because I'm just a college student!
What self tanner lotions/wipes/sprays/etc would you suggest?
