Interesting idea. Getting married on a (semi)random day next year (2013). Then thatsame day in 2015 (being a Saturday) we have a giant party. Any thoughts? You may remember a few months ago I posted about my FH not wanting to have a legal wedding? I asked him about this and he said, well now I think I may have been wrong and I think it may be a good idea to have a legal wedding. OK…right. I think it’s a great idea! I love the idea of a very private ceremony, then a big reception. I don’t know. Does it sound weird? Crazy?

why are you waiting so long for the party/ reception? i think its a little strange but if it works for you go for it! I personally would find it strange to go to a “wedding” 2 years after they’ve been married..
are you keeping the elopement a secret or will everyone know you’re legally married?

@MmeSilverBullet: Sure have a party 1-2 years later, but call it an anniversary party! I think anniversary parties are just fine and can be pretty fun events! I wouldn’t call it a reception a year later though. Receptions are to receive the wedding guests (aka thank them) for witnessing your wedding.
I do have friends that had an anniversary party 2 years later. They had a newly built house, did the landscaping, and were in a position to actually host a party after 2 years.

@bbsoon2be: we’re probably waiting so long because FHs sister is getting married in 2014 and we just cannot ask guests to travel twice in one year.
@sienna76: 2 year anniversary party sounds good to me! I’ll have to think about that.

Why not have a private ceremony on a Friday and a big reception the next day?

we’re doing the same thing! we just got married on 12/12/12 (at 12 o’clock), with closest family only. it turned out to be a 12-person ceremony, including myself and DH + the officiant! hahaha, total accident.
we liked the date 12/12/12, and thought about having the real wedding then, but it’s a cold day and a wednesday and too close to christmas! so instead we’re gonna choose a saturday in summer of 2014, and rent a huge boat and have a fun boat trip. :] we just want the time to plan a really awesome wedding, since a lot of our friends will have to fly half-way across the world. they deserve a well-planned out blast of a day! it’s good that we got all the legal stuff out of the way so we can focus on the FUN stuff when all our friends and families come!

I think it’s a good idea! FI and I are actually getting married on Christmas Eve (we decided this literally two days ago) but keeping the elopement a secret. Then, we will have a commitment ceremony a 1.5-2 years later. Surpriiiiiise! We’ve been secretly married for x years! Haha!
