I think it might be too early to send out save the dates, but you can spread the word in other ways in the meantime. That said, there are no rules on this, you know your guests best, and you should do what feels right to you.
For our international guests, we shared the date on facebook and emailed them as soon as we knew the date to give them advanced notice. We then mailed their save the dates with everyone else's six months ahead of time. Our parents spread the word between when we set the date and sent out the save the dates to a lot of people on the list.

I have a question about timeline for sending out save the dates. Our wedding is not until June 2010, but most of my family lives in Europe and fiance's friends and coworkers are spread out all over the globe (literally). We gave some of his friends who work in Asia save the dates already so they can plan well in advance. Our wedding will be a destination wedding for most of our guests, only a few live locally.
My question is, if I send out save the dates now to the rest of our relatives and friends out of the country or on the other coast (many of whom are already calling to ask about the date), should I send them now to in-state guests too? Would they get lost or would people appreciate getting them well in advance?
