Well I'm sending mine out about a year in advance. It's mostly because a lot of people we plan to invite are coming from out of town and we want to give them a chance to save up for plane tix and hotel rooms. I don't think there's a "too early" for STDs. I say go for it!
@Miss Cake - this is what I'm thinking, at least 70% of our guests are coming from about an hour away and knowing that they all got hotel rooms for my sister's wedding a few weeks ago, I thought they might appreciate the heads up.
I want mine to arrive exactly one year from the date of the party, October 30th, so I'm sending mine out end of the month.
I too don't think it is too early to send out the save the date especially if you are doing the wedding during the holdiay season. It will take a lot of work to get it done between now and then if you wait until after you get the ring. Could you use the same idea with a New Year Holiday card? That would give you all of December to get the cards ready.
i agree. i think 9months to a year is the appropriate time to send the save the dates.
I think if you are planning a wedding around Chrismas that people would appreciate the heads up so that they can make their plans for the holiday.
We are having our wedding during a long weekend in the summer and 4 hours away from where the closest people live and are sending out our save the dates 10 months in advance. (this weekend actually!) Already though, close family has been thanking me for the super advance notice as many of them vacation elsewhere during this weekend normally.

My bf and I will be engaged in the next month at the most and we're looking to plan our wedding for next December. I saw a Save the Date/Photo Christmas card that I just adore but I don't know if a year is too much time between Save the Date and the wedding.
