if you have the budget for it, you could have both the same day and get a party bus or a coach bus rental for 10 hours to do both the ceremony and reception.  A party bus fits about 30 people (I think), a couch bus rental fits about 45 people.  I’m not sure about the cost for a party bus (with bar, tvs, and lighting), but I ran quotes for coach bus in NY and the cost was about $1,000.  If this is an option it’s a good way to do both the same day.

Are you certain that the other guests won’t make the 2 hour drive. Honestly, 2 hours is not much and at all the weddings I’ve been to – no matter how far the drive/plane ride – loved ones find a way to make it.

If you are certain that you need to split it up, I would suggest doing the ceremony and small dinner on a separate weekend (or even a Thursday night!) so people don’t feel they are being invited only to the reception when others were at the wedding.
