So I teach high school English, and in my 9th grade class (14 and 15 year olds), we’re watching the newer Romeo and Juliet since the kids are done with their final. One of my girls just goes, “Who is that?” when Leonardo DiCaprio was on the screen. One of the other girls goes, “It’s that guy from that boat movie…” and someone else goes, “Yeah, Titanic, right?”
Am I really that old that my students don’t know who Leonardo DiCaprio is?! Does he not still make it into TigerBeat on a regular basis? Lol.

Omg show that movie next! I love young Leo (but he’s kinda gross now).

@tntrav44: hahaha yeah, I also feel old when I have no clue who the people on the front of magazine covers are, now. I know Zac Efron, that’s about it.

Holy cow, that’s bad. And that reminds me — I read something back in April about all kinds of teenagers who didn’t even know that the Titanic was a real event. They thought it was just a movie.

@Gemstone: I saw that too!
makes me sad 🙁

You are not that old! that’s just them being oblivious, I mean, it’s not like he’s a “has been”, he’s still acting in current movies!! Kids these days!

@Gemstone: On the flip side, I know a woman older than me who thought the entire movie was a true story. She was really upset to learn it isn’t!

I was taking a general education course during my last semester (this past semester) and I’m considered an “older student,” anyway (ripe old age of 26), so I was amongst 17-18-19-year-olds.
They didn’t know the following:
– Back to the Future movies (be still my Michael J. Fox loving heart)
– My Big Fat Greek Wedding
– TV show Friends
– The Shawshank Redemption (Someone said “Tim Robbins who?”)
– Mrs. Doubtfire
– Lethal Weapon movies
– Johnathan Taylor Thomas (forget about using JTT!)
Oh, I can go on and on. I really cried inside when I saw that these kids were born between 1993-1995.

@BetterSherm: That all hurts me. I’m currently working my way through the Wonder Years series, I don’t even want to think of their reaction to that 😉
@tntrav44: Uhhh Shutter Island?! They have to know that!!!
@les105: Me too! Whenever I look at the most popular Instagram photos or see some Teen People or whatever I get so confused. I have no idea who any of these young “stars” are anymore.

I realized I was old when I invited a few grad school classmates to an 80s club to see Lisa Lisa perform. They didn’t know who that was or recognize her songs when I [tried] to sing them. They are all in their 20s, how could they not know Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam?!

@redheadem: Oh wow! Hadn’t heard that one!

This reminds me of when I was at my friends house and her little daughter (7) went “mum I’m bored, play with me….” I said why don’t you go and watch a video.
She said. What’s a video!!!!
Apparently moderm day children don’t know their video’s from their DVDs!
I felt about 100!
