You will never guess what happened today Bees!!
And no, its not proposal related, that would just be too easy to guess!
I live in BC, about 6 hours from the Alberta border. I drove my step-dad to Hanna, AB yesterday (which is another 3 hours in so a 9 hour drive) to buy a new big rig for his business.
So here we are, in another province, finally got permits and insurance figured out and we’re ready to hit the road. I was texting back and forth with a friend, trying to arrange to meet her for coffee in Calgary on my way home. She tells me about this cool storm they’re having and I look off into the distance and can see it way off (in BC, there’s too many mountains to see weather patterns in other towns, so this was cool for me!) We take off on our long journey home and start driving towards this storm, me in the pick up following my stepdad in the big truck (just in case he has any problems with the newused truck)
It was absolutely stunningly beautiful! I honestly have never seen anything like it, I was dumbfounded. I wish I hadn’t been driving, it was so picture worthy! Lightning was striking off in the distance, on the left, on the right, left right left right. As I got closer, it got more intense, the lighting was still sort of off in the distance but the rain picked up substantially. Wipers went on full blast and I still could barely see, my hands got tight on that steering, pulling myself as far forward as possible to peer through the window (thank goodness Alberta are so darn straight or I would have driven right off, I could not see a thing through that rain. The lightning keeps flashing (I’ve seen over a hundred strikes by now, crazy!!) and now the thunder is as fast as the lighting and deafeningly loud. I am officially no longer enjoying the storm at this point. I want to stop by I don’t. We’re almost through it and my step-dad’s right in front of me and it’s going to be fine I tell myself. Just keep truckin, you’ve driven through worse.
I don’t remember what I was thinking exactly at the moment but all of the sudden, amidst all the noise and chaos I hear and feel the sounds of the absolute loudest pop ever. It was like a gun went off inside my ear. It was mostly indescribable but it was the loudest scariest thing ever heard and felt (I felt that noise right to the bone) Writing it down and remembering it just gives me the sickest feeling in the pit of my stomach. And then my horn is blaring itself, the interior lights all turn on, my driver window rolls down and the engine quits. Just dies. So I coast to a stop on the side of the highway, all the while freaking out and crying and shaking and pleading aloud for my step-dad to please see me and come back because I am so scared, I don’t know what to do because the truck just got hit by frigging lightning and now I am sitting in it, dead and still in the middle of all this said lighting.
He didn’t see me there was way too much rain. He said after that right beforehand, he had looked and seen my lights and then heard the lighting, felt the roof of his truck shake, thought “well that was really close” and then looked in his mirror and realized he couldn’t see lights anymore.
I picked up my phone, called him, and the call fails. I seriously just about had a panic attack but I looked and I had a signal so I tried again. It went through that time and he answered and asked me if I was okay. He figured maybe it had struck close by or something and I had driven off the road in an effort to dodge it. He didn’t even think that it had hit me. I said (I imagine very shakily and not with near enough composure as normal) “Um. Yeah, I think I’m okay but the truck just got hit by lightning and its dead”
He was pretty dumbfounded, turned his truck around and has come back. In the less than five minutes it took him to come back(it was a semi so he had to drive to the next dirt road or driveway to turn around), the storm was pretty much totally gone, so had we continued going 100km/h we would have been clear of that storm in no time flat. But no, of course, the truck just had to be hit with lightning!
The truck is dead now, we lost a lot of time and I got home at like midnight, tired and way to wired to sleep. I am so stunned!! Seriously, why do these crazy things happen to me?! Two weeks ago, my pony got attacked by a bear (she’s going to be okay) and now this?!? What in the heck is going on here?!
I am in such disbelief, so utterly flabergasted. I bought a lottery ticket before the day was out. I’ve never bought one before so I grabbed the small stuff in my wallet ($7) and told the clerk my truck got struck by lightning and I needed a lottery ticket and a play with an extra is $7 so I took my ticket and pinned it to the frridge to check tomorrow 😀
Something good has to come out of this freaky luck right?
