Has anyone in the Boston area had a moissanite set? I found a lovely loose stone on JTV and a setting at Jewelery Exchange, but JE won’t set a moissanite! I don’t know if they can’t or won’t, but I’ve never had a loose stone set, let alone one that JE claims to be hard to work with. Is it that different than a natural stone? They also claimed that moissys were very soft and “kinda” fake so they may just refuse to work with it. Anyone had a good experience in the area? TIA!

I wish I could help you! I live in Florida, but there are a few local reputable private jewelers within 10 miles of me that had NO issues and were actually excited to see a barely pink moissy. I called them to ask about potentially setting an Amora gem and they were thrilled to possibly work with me.
The only time I have felt resistance is when I go into a big box jeweler with my moissy earrings/wedding set and looked over their stock. Good luck on finding someone! It isn’t impossible for sure. 🙂

They’re harder than sapphires, will they set sapphires? I feel like they’re just being snooty (thinking they’re glorified cz’s or something else incorrect) and don’t know much about the stone.

missfroggy: Darn! If only I had my stone and setting when I was in FL in Aug haha
MrsTywinLannister: I know! I think they are just refusing for some reason or not knowledgeable at all, which I think is worse than refusing. At least don’t try to spew incorrect BS to me!

I think they’re worried about liability from a customer potentially coming back and saying their loose stone was a diamond, and the shop switched it with a moissanite.

strawbabies: Maybe if it were white, but I told them it was a purple moissanite.

Wow, sounds like they just don’t know what moissanite is…

Benchcraft jewelers in Belmont is amazing. I don’t know if he would do it but he has done tons of repairs and resizing for me.

Have you tried Long’s Jewelers? I have been in there numerous times and they have always been super nice, never purchased anything though because I have found better deals online.

Try Goldsmith and Co in Brookline. My fiance had my loose diamond set there for my engagement ring – believe it or not, it was quite difficult to find someone to set diamonds as well!

pinkshoes: No idea if they’ll do it or not, but Fiance got my ring at Lux, Bond & Green on Boylston St. and we’ve had nothing but positive experiences with them. FI’s mom has used them for over 20 years for all kinds of things, and they’ve always been great.

LoveLikeCrazy: I think in this case Long’s might be a bad idea- I brought a white sapphire to have set and the guy was so RUDE about it. Like, why would I deign to appear before him with something less than a diamond. He tried to convince me to put my little stone away and buy a diamond- he seriously could not understand why I wouldn’t want to get a diamond! Anyways, maybe just one bad employee, but I will never go back there.
pinkshoes: I know an awesome jeweler @ DTX who set my white sapphire and was nothing but respectful, kind, and complimentary about the high quality of my stone! He even gave a serious discount on the setting. Can we send each other private messages? I’d love to let you know his name.
