Here’s the deal. My husband and I are having a huge (but friendly) disagreement on a Monopoly rule. He agreed that we could come to the bee for opinions. To prevent bias, I will not say who believes what until a large number of people have voted/chimed in.
We both know that this is not an “official” Monopoly rule, but possibly a common house rule similar to putting money in free parking. One of us believes that if you are trying to negotiate a property trade with another player, in addition to using property and cash, you can sweeten the pot with a defined number of “free passes” on that property. An example would be Player 1 will give Player 2 an orange (cheaper property) in exchange for a green (more expensive property) to complete a monopoly for both properties. In addition, Player 2 would then receive 3 free passes on any of the green properties at any time of their choosing. After the passes run out then Player 2 would have to pay Player 1 the current rental rate for the green property, including rent for any houses or hotels.
Fair or not? Should you be allowed to negotiate by offering free passes on property? I will add a poll for voting.

It’s not a rule I’ve ever played with, but seems fair to me

As long as everyone agrees to the rules at the beginning of the game, sure.

Husband says: That’s a rule I played with in my household.
I say: Not a rule I’ve ever played with, but I’d be down with it as long as everyone agreed.

I think it’s a neat rule. I think you should be able to negotiate anything you want. Whoever doesn’t like the rule can just not agree to the negotiation.

@hotpinkbride: I have never played that rule but it seems reasonable to me. 🙂

We are ALL about the Monopoly negotiation. It makes the game fun and more “social” if you will. We get very, very creative.

I’ve never heard or played with that rule.
I’m competitive so I would want my DH to pay up if he landed on my properties, no exceptions/passes! 😛 Its not a rule I would be a fan of, but if everyone agrees to it then why not?

@adoc86: Haha, that’s right, make him pay up!

Ah, Monopoly arguments – the reason my FI and I have banned ourselves from playing together!
I’d say as long as both parties agree, then it’s a cool rule!

I’ve never played with that rule but I like it! I’d say as long as all players agree before the game starts, it’s totally fair.

@bowsergirl: Hahaha, yes Monopoly arguments are so brutal! But the holidays are coming up which means lot of time for board games so we have to get this settled! 🙂
@PermaStudent: Thanks for the response!

@hotpinkbride: I’ve never played Monopoly with that rule, and my family LOVES Monopoly.
I say no becuase what happens if you have a dispute on how many passes? I’d rather take cash or property and own that bad boy! BUILD ALL THE HOTELS!!!

If it’s made in a negotiation then I think it’s fair.
