I am 18.5 weeks pregnant and for the past couple hours I have had pretty bad lower back pain. It has gradually gotten worse and progressed, and now I have pressure in my lower pelvic area. I don’t know what contractions feel like…could this be Braxton Hicks? The pain does not come and go, it’s been steady.
I am kind of freaked out because I haven’t felt pain like this, and if I call my OBGYN’s office they will just tell me to go to the emergency room (they say that if you have any kind of pain).
Is this the sort of thing I should go to the ER for, or can it be explained?

Could just be the way the baby is sitting also. Maybe try to move the baby by putting a warm wet washcloth on the top of the stomach, the baby will gravitate to the warmth. It may just be sitting low and on a nerve. Them sitting low can feel like pressure. I always suggest calling your doctor if you have ANY concerns, their expertise is what you pay for so use it if you are unsure.

Are you well hydrated? I know at the hospital where I work, when you have any kind of pain like that they recommend drinking 1 litre of water, and then laying down on your left side for a while, a lot of contractions/pain in pregnancy are caused by over exertion and dehydration, so that should do the trick, if not I would go into emerg.

I looked to make sure but the information my OB gave me goes along with what @Ms Mini: said. It says if you experience those symptoms, lay down on your left side for an hour while drinking four to five cups of water and emptying your bladder as needed. It says if it persists even after doing that for an hour though to call the doctor or go to the hospital. I can’t speak from experience but hopefully that helps.

@MissDareDevil: Just saw this – I hope you’re feeling better and it wasn’t anything serious!
