This is a tough one!  I’ve used a “mini” machine, but can’t recommend it. :-p  If you’re travelling by car, I’d almost say you’d be best off with a basic Singer (the kind you can get from Target)–they’re not too heavy or bulky.

Good luck!! I totally sympathize with the handmade gift dilemma.  I usually end up finishing all of mine at the last minute, so sounds like you are much better than I am!

the “sew mini” isn’t a real machine. you’re better off buying a basic singer. http://www.amazon.com/2259-Tradition-Free-Arm-19-Stitch-Machine/dp/B0051HJ6JS/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&srs=2600618011&ie=UTF8&qid=1400625501&sr=1-4 try that one. it’s basic enough, and it has decent reviews.

all you need to make it portable is a carrying case- http://www.amazon.com/611-BR-Universal-Carrying-Free-Arm-Machines/dp/B000WOM50W/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&srs=2600618011&ie=UTF8&qid=1400625594&sr=1-1

ladybennett:  you’re welcome! the carrying case is just one of those things that’s useful. my mother is a seamstress, and her sewing machines over the years have all had cases like that. makes life easier, especially if you’re moving or traveling at all.
