I love the Brother machines. That's what I have. I haven't looked at the recent models but they have really great customer service.
I have a baby lock which used to be bernina. It was pretty pricey ($1100) I love it, It very intuitive and practically does every thing it even threads itself.
On another note I had a White that i bought as a Senior in High School for $150 at Joann's and that machine was next to indestructable It lasted me through all my fashion classes in college. I was very sad when after 4 years of hard abuse and almost no love and care it died. But it was a great basic machine. They still sell an equivilant model.
I have an older Bernina, that used to be my grandma's. I am pretty much in love with it. It has held up amazingly over the last few weeks of work I've put through it! I would just be sure that whatever you choose has good reviews.
I have a Janome Jem Gold that I love. http://www.sewingmachinesplus.com/sewing-machines-janome-660-jem-gold.php
I bought it after reading several different sewing blogs and seeing different women that sew a lot using them. It's a lighter weight machine so it's good if you are going to take classes. It's definitely not super expensive, but for the price I have no complaints.

I'm getting one for Christmas! And my mom did a ton of research, so when I find out what kind she got me, I'll let you know!
I have a singer that I got when I was 12. It has always worked well for me. No problems. My grandma is a huge seamstress and I know she has had a Bernina for years. Viking is also a good brand too I think.
But if you just want to start out I think a Singer or a Brother that you can get for $100 at Target or Walmart would work just fine.

I love love loooove it.
I seem to be a little odd... I love Kenmores. My mom has one that's been working forever. I just got one for myself, pretty basic but just what I wanted, and more heavy duty than I expected
@KMSull - I'm jealous! I wish I was getting one for Christmas. Can't wait to hear what your mom picked!
Thanks for all the help and ideas ladies!
Oooh, we have a... baby lock I think? It's amazing. It even embroiders!
The last one was a singer, which was great, but I am all about this new one. It is so amazing that I, the non sew-er of the family, decided to get in on the action, haha.
Good luck with getting your sewing machine!

I used to sew years ago and am looking to get back into it. I'm going to start with a few simple wedding projects and eventually I want to quilt again. I've never owned my own sewing machine, but I think it's time! Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!
