I put a sewing machine on our registry (my fiance was actually excited about this plan!), and a friend of mine recommended the Singer 7470 Confidence. She admitted to doing little research before purchasing it, but has been really happy with it. It's more than you want to spend, but maybe someone here will have other suggestions for you.
If you are looking for something simple, you might be able to buy one used off of Craig's List or at a garage sale. I got a hand-me-down from a family member and after some Googling, I was able to find the manual online. It was from the late 70s/early 80s and worked fine. I just needed it to learn how to thread the bobbin on that particular machine. I've quilted and made Halloween costumes with it. It works great for the little I need it for.

I really want to buy a sewing machine. I used to take lessons as a kid (very very basic)... and now I keep seeing all these DIY projects. I want to try to make clutches and table runners. I am thinking that I want something about $200. A part of me feels like I should just go higher/better so that its better for the long run but since I am way beginner I don't want to spend too much on something.
What sewing machines do you guys use or recommend? I love the ones that embroider but that seems like a lot of money. I want to be able to sew materials like burlap or make curtains...
