Are you pretty early in your pregnancy?  I would wait to make the final decision until you are really close to giving birth (or even right after).  Sometimes you look at the baby an you just know - my parents were all sent on naming my brother one name and after he was born, the changed their mind when they saw him.  Also, I would recommend not telling close friends or family what you are picking - people's feelings get hurt too easily!

Haha def not like picking pets names! lol...although I only have experienc in picking pets names Laughing

Growing up I picked out my childrens names

Landon & Austin for boys...although my FI family has a tradition of carrying on the name Charles. Not crazy about it, so maybe I will try and work it into a middle name hehe

For girls... Layla, Sofia and Emileigh (emily)

We are expecting, but don't really have any names picked out yet.

For you, though, I really like the name Carter, it makes me think of a super awesome person I know with that name.  Plus, it seems like every other kid nowadays is either named Kayden, Jayden, or Hayden (or some version of that spelling).

I agree, I like that Carter is something different which is really nice.

I think the best thing to do is just start a list and keep adding to it.

Congratulations! I like both names, maybe you go do what a pp suggested and use one name as the middle name.

DH and are not TTC yet but we have talked a little bit about baby names. He wants a junior which I refuse so we cant settle on a boys name. But I love Jayde Ava and Cheyanne Brooke.

We're not TTC yet but I really like Adeline (Addie for short) Marie for a girl but DH isn't really a fan.  We both like Jason for a boy but don't have a middle name that we would use with it yet.

EDIT TO ADD: I definitely prefer Carter over Kayden.

Well I have Ray, Erick, and Elena- pretty simple names. Personally I like Carter better.

My hubby chose to name our last son Ramses. Most people don't know where the name comes from so they always get confused since they've never heard it before. Only the docs or professionals seem to be familiar with the history of the name but oh well, it's definitely unique.

Between the two, I would pick Carter as well. The name Kayden seems too made up and like a PP said, very similar to other newly created names like Jayden, Jaylee, Kyler (those are kids names of people I know). Personally, i don't like those newer names. This girl i know had 2 girls recently and named them Kenley and Ainsley. Another acquaintance named hers Emmersyn and Annistynn. To each their own i guess...

We aren't TTC yet, but I love the name Grace - but that's what I named my kitty cat (well, Gracie)! LOL. i have always loved the name Ava too.

We have a little girl name Brooklyn shelby... We are going to try ttc soon, and if it's a girl the next one will be Taylor. According to my husband if we have a boy it will be named Tucker, but I'm still arguing that one! I love the name Austin for a boy!

@Daisys4U: I would go with Carter. Kayden, Jayden, Aiden, and Braydon are all over the place these days.

I'm pretty sure we are going with Georgia Grace for my daughter. I really wanted Georgia Raine, but DH want's the middle name to be after his gram, so how can I say no to that?

A friend of mine has a son named Kayden. Another friend has a son named Carter! I have to say I prefer Carter because it sounds more boy-ish to me. Kayden is kind of... girly. Though I know ANOTHER boy who spells it Caden, if you spell it that way, it becomes less girly (in my opinion).

We named our daughter Channing. I thought it was different enough that no other girls in her classes would have the same name (I was a Jessica and always had four other girls with the same name in every class), but not different enough that people would think we made it up or that it was just too weird.

Check out Laura Wattenberg's book "The Baby Name Wizard" and her blog (look up her last name and "baby names") because she does more of a sociological bent on baby names.

For the two names you picked out, for example, after reading her book, one thing that you might want to watch for is the growing trend of parents using masculine names for girls, in the same vein that Taylor was once a boys name and now it's very common among girls. Kayden is close to Hayden, a popular girls' name although ultimately unisex, and a more hip derivation of Kayla or Kaylee--similar to how Hayden has become a trendy alternate of Hayley. Carter is also a popular name among parents for girls. That's not to say either name is unacceptable for a boy since indeed, they are still being used for boys and it may turn out that they'll remain forever unisex. And ultimately, they're nice names and no one will think they're weird. This is more an outside possibility for the long term--there are men named Kelly and Morgan out there who really wish the 80s never happened.

Just keep in mind that any variation of the A-den names is going to be so popular that there will be 10 of them in your child's KG class.  Aiden, Cayden, Braden, Jayden, Grayden, Hayden will all be well represented.

Carter is super cute.  BUT, when it comes down to it, all that matters is that you love the name.  This is exactly why we shared our name with no one until the baby was born!

I don't have any babies, but I like Carter better as well.  I'm a little torn because while I really, really like the sound of all the "aiden/ayden/aden" names, I agree that they're all over the place now.  They're nice names so I doubt they'll sound dated in a bad way, but they will be very reminiscent of the era.

My little boys name is Seth Allen. I've always loved the name Seth and Allen is a male tradition name in my family.

We find out tomorrow if baby in the oven is going to be Autumn Grace or Mason Bentley. Cant wait!!!!!

We have been debating on switching Autumn Grace for Tessa Grace (Tess for short)....hmmm decisions....

We don't have kids yet but have decided that if/when we have a girl her name will be Piper Ruth (Ruth after my granny).

As for you, I like both names but Carter will grow with him better than Kayden, I think.

I like Carter over Kayden as well. Just for popularity concerns. I also like Cayden better than Kayden because the "K" makes it a little feminine IMO.

@flamingred: I LOVE Georgia Grace. That is a great name!

Our girl name is Camilla Anne (called Millie Anne because yes, we are Southern lol) which are family names. If a boy the first name will be Daniel, also named after family, and the mn has not been decided. We are both very traditional and love passing down family names.

I like Carter--and I just wanted to say, my name was extremely popular in the 70s/80s.  I grew up with at least 3 other kids in my class that had the same name as me, so I always had to use my last initial as part of my first name (ex. "Violet" D.).  And now as an adult, I work with three other women that have the same name, one even sits next to my office so that when people come to deliver things to me, they mistakenly deliver it to wrong person.  Basically, I'm trying to say that I would avoid the A-Den names, they are beautiful names, but it's no fun having a popular name.

@Violet Violet: Is your name Jennifer? LOL I was surrounded by a zillion Jennifer's growing up- and still am.  I don't want our future children to have very popular names, either. (Although I don't want them to have "rare" or made-up names either. I'm looking for a healthy balance)

    I like the name Carter!

I'm a teacher, and I love it when I get a more traditional name.  I teach in a more urban setting, and I've gotten all kinds of crazy names- Mysti Morning, 2'Nebria (yes, that's the number 2), King James, MiQueen.  Not to mention all of the names that sound a bit more traditional but are spelled more creatively- Hayleigh, Braydenn.  Last year I there was a teacher that came in and said they had the most interesting name of the year... turns out it was Thomas, which seems like an ordinary name but is in fact not that common.

On that note, my husband and I would love to have a Jack and Elizabeth when we have kids.

FH and I are AGES away from having kids but we have already talked about names we like. We like Lucy for a girl, or Isabella, and Jadon or Noah for a boy. "Jadon" is actually a very old name, from the Bible, meaning "God hears me". I like it better than its moden incarnation "Jayden."

Kaia Lynn is going to be my daughters name. My dad's mom wanted my middle name to be Lynn because that is hers but my moms middle name is Lynn too and she didn't want it to seem like she names me after her so I got Lee after her mom. So, I am giving my daughter that middle name in honor of both of them. Her initials will be KLS... which are my initials too. Pure coincidence.

Benjamin Allen will be my sons name. FI's Hebrew name is Benjamin (but said in hebrew which I don't know) and his grandfathers middle name was Allen... The name is important to him and I kinda like how traditional it sounds. In the end his initials wil be BAS... again, coincidentlly those are FI's initials too. We didn't even realize it until somebody pointed it out. I hate it when people name all their kids with the same first letter or make patterns out of thier names or initials. Ours was PURE coincidence and I love the names too much to change them!

    We like for girls:

Honor Marie, Elisabeth James, Sophia Rose.  (Sophia after my Great Grandmother, I hate how its so common right now) I also love the name Lila.

And Boys (a lot harder for us)

Van Ryan (Van after his Great Grandfather and Ryan after the Hubby)

We have THE most generic last name. Take a guess. So I wanted a little bit different first name so we didnt have another "John" "Jim" Or "Joe".

We kinda have big Familys so the names are hard to chose because it seems like we have one of everything thats a "classic".

I love the boys name Carter! Wink

@meganmp1: My DH is an inner-city teacher too and same story. My favorite is a child named Akhenaten (like the Egyptian king), but pronounced "Ah-KENNA-ton."

My niece was listing off the names of kids in her class: "Sebastian, Isabella, Teak, Ramone, Makenna, Cheyenne, Grieg (sp?), and Danny."

It was the "and Danny" that made us crack up.

I like Carter better as well.

And I can't believe I am putting this on the internet, cuz I never want to share my names with anyone (for fear of someone stealing them), but since we are probably never having kids, I think it is safe.

We lean more towards unisex names, since we wouldn't want to find out the sex before we had them.  Our first would be Kendall (Kendal for a girl) and coincidentally it is a perfect mix of our dads names.  I also love Ryan, but for a girl (spelled Rian) and also Ainsley.

Our nephews and niece are Cade, Darcy and Dean.  Common names, but unique enough that we haven't had the same name come up yet.

If we have a son his name will be Benjamin Douglas - Bennie for short. He will be named after my husbands Grandpa Bennie and the middle name is my Uncle who passed away 6 years ago. Other than that we dont have anything picked out as we are several (read - 5ish) years away from TTC. However, I LOVE the name Charlotte for a girl. I believe my name is somewhat old fashioned and definitely not popular - Clare. My husband is Noah and when he was born it was unheard of but nowadays you hear of tons of little boys (and even girls) named Noah.

@Violachap- I knew someone with the name Christina Marie! It has a great ring to it.

We've talked about names quite a few times. Ok, mostly it's me suggesting names and DH just kind of shrugging and not caring :p We aren't expecting for awhile, but, we have agreed on Genevieve for a girl. We also like Seraphina, but for some reason I keep thinking of our daughter (if we ever have one) as Genevieve. But of course it could all change when the child is born! For boys, we've agreed on Benjamin as well, with Benji for short. I also really like Greyson though and DH isn't opposed (he just thinks it doesn't sound like a baseball player's name lol). But, when it happens, if it happens, we'll probably just have a list and see what baby looks like after giving birth.
