If your doing your own makeup I would really concentrate on your skin.  Get a foundation that has a long life (one that has staying power – I love temptu s/b foundation – its meant to be used with an airbrush but can be applied with your fingers or a brush – its sweat and water proof)

As you mentioned Use Primer (but use a little moisturizer under it).  Also be sure you use concealer under your eyes and only any access redness on your face (usually around the nose and on the chin).  After you apply your foundation use a powder to set it.  Then apply your blush and eye makeup (use water proof mascara and eye liner incase you tear up)

If your going for a more natural look just concentrate on your skin/cheeks/lashes/lips.  Use soft colors and just make sure you have some powder on hand to touch up if you get shiny.

Here is a photo of makeup I think is very natural and pretty (yet dark enough to see in photos) for a fair skinned bride.

It looks to me like she’s wearing “photoshop.”  I just couldn’t resist!  But on a more serious side, she’s got a light, shimmery eye and lots of color to her face.  Well groomed brows and a pretty pink lip gloss tie the look together.  Lots of brides do their own makeup; just make sure that your makeup doesn’t have SPF in it (apparently it reflects in photos) and go light on the moisturizer the day of so you’re not overly oily, and I’m sure you’ll be fine!  Better than fine: beautiful!
