Yesterday, FI mentioned that some woman died from drinking two gallons of Coke a day. While neither one of us is by any means anti-pop (although if he has his way, it’ll be SEVERAL years before our kiddo–who’s only two months old at this point–is allowed any pop whatsoever) we’re both pretty sure that the line’s got to be drawn somewhere on how much to have in a day. Sure there were times when I’ve had a few cans worth in a day, but 2 gallons? Really?
Here’s one of the many links covering this story: http://www.kktv.com/news/elevenforhealth/headlines/Woman-Dies-From-Drinking-Too-Much-Soda-190983521.html

Too much of anything is bad for you! Soda isn’t the best thing for you, but anything in moderation is fine. 2 gallons of caffeine a day is horrible for your health! But even drinking 2 gallons of water a day is terrible – http://drbenkim.com/drink-too-much-water-dangerous.html

That’s not true. Drinking 2 gallons at once without peeing is unsafe. Drinking 2 gallons of water throughout fhe day is perfectly safe. People do that all the time.

Yeah, I really don’t think soda manufacturers are to blame here. Anyone with common sense knows drinking two gallons of anything a day is not healthy, especially something full of sugar and caffeine. I’d say she died of lack of judgment.

We discussed this yesterday here – http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/disturbing-article#axzz2Kt4ptGg8
Its crazy to think that someone could drink 4 – two liters in one day.

@MLDoddie: I read she drank an average of 10L!

While I am not a super ‘pro-pop’ person or anything, I think the full story here is important. The woman also ‘ate very little’ and smoked 30 cigarrettes a day. That’s not to say the pop didn’t make things worse, but she was very unhealthy otherwise too.
I try to limit myself to 1 can of diet a day (I do love it) because I also like coffee and tea and so I need to watch my caffeine intake!

@AB Bride: That’s completely nuts! I cant even imagine. I enjoy Coke Zero and limit myself to one can a day (most of the time). I cant even finish a “real” can of Coke – its way too sweet and syrup-y!

I would never drink that crap. If I really want a soda I get a natural one.

I worked at a salon with this massage therapist who would bring a 2L of coke with him for his 6 hour shift.. He absolutely had to drink the whole thing.. I wonder how many he drank at home!!

I don’t een think my two year old knows what soda is. If she’s thirsty, she asks for juice and for something special she gets ovaltine. It isn’t even on purpose, it’s just because we drink a lot of water. I think soda is a bad habit.
But DD also knows what coffee and wine are, thanks to DH and me 🙂

I read an article by Food Babe on facebook last night that talks about all of the harmful chemicles in the soda’s that we drink and that the diet and low calorie drinks are worse then the regular drinks. I personally don’t drink soda at all. (I went from drinking 1-2 soda’s a day to none) in the past 6 months. I have 1 cup of coffee in the morning that I put half in half in (no sugar or creamer) and then I drink water during the day. I get a lot of migraines and I think that part of my migraines are associated with the chemicals in the foods I eat/drink. So part of my 2013 new years resolution was good self care and I’ve been trying really hard to eat better and be more conscious of what I consume.

I mean, I love Pepsi and drink it a few times a week, but jesus, 10L a DAY? FI and I were reading that article and she was essentially drinking 11x the daily limit of caffeine and 2.2 POUNDS of sugar. BARF.
