I think cuff links only work for French Cuff shirts...regular shirts already have a button and would look somewhat odd, no? My husband wore cuff links for the wedding, but I had to buy a French Cuff Shirt for him. If I am correct, the cuffs come out a bit more on a French cuff shirt than a regular shirt, meaning they are slightly wider...but that could just be me. (sorry, I'm not very good at describing it.)
I believe it depends on how you fold the cuffs--my fiance showed me this weekend how you do the regular cuffs (he didn't even know about French cuffs). You just tuck the cuff in for regular cuffs and for French you make the insides face each other.
Thanks, MissBlueBear! The French cuffs look nice under a jacket, but I'm worried that they'll be too much after he takes the jacket off (he's kind of a sedate dresser, if that makes sense).
Yiska, that's what I thought too (there was a site online that said you could do this), but what do you end up doing about the buttons?
What do you mean what to do about the buttons?
I thought if it has buttons, then cufflinks are not needed. If there are not buttons and each cuff has a button-hole, then you do need cufflinks.
I think there might be some terminology confusion in this thread.
Cufflinks can only be worn with shirts with link cuffs or with convertible cuffs - not with regular button cuff shirts.
Link cuffs come in various styles - the double cuff or french cuff is one style. If you're concerned about it being too much, a single cuff style might be a better option. If I'm understanding yiska correctly, the french cuff can also be folded under to resemble a single cuff.
Just as a disclaimer--don't consider me an expert by any means! :) I didn't even know how cufflinks worked prior to planning a wedding. ;)
Haha -- thanks everyone! I think the easiest thing to do is just buy him a new shirt. =)

When wearing cufflinks, do guys need to wear a french cuff shirt? Or can they wear a shirt with any type of cuff? I've seen both yes and no. Thanks!
