Currently in the process of looking for an e-ring. There is one from a designer that I really want to see in person and there is only ONE jeweler within an hour of my that carries that designer. I talked to that jeweler and asked if they had that setting in the store and if not, if they could get it before I made the 45 minute drive. They told me they could get any setting but it would be a $40 deposit! I think that is crazy! I haven’t even SEEN the ring in person yet! Is this normal for jewelers to ask you to PAY to see a certain setting that is not in the store?? I am sad, I really wanted to see this ring…and I don’t think I should have to pay the $40 to see it 🙁

to me that sounds nuts! i am not sure i would want to deal with a jeweler that is going to start out like this, you know?

Maybe the designer doesn’t take rings back if no one buys them. In such cases a deposit is justified. I don’t know where you live, but I imagine you can find a lovely ring without such a long drive and a deposit. Admittedly this is coming from someone who was so picky she custom ordered wedding bands from different jewelers to get just the right ones. Obviously custom orders required a non-refundable deposit on sight unseen items, and full payment before seeing them in person. That makes your deposit seem more okay.

I don’t think that would be worth it unless you know 100% that you want the ring. Which, isn’t that the point of trying it on? to find this out? seems a little silly to me that they would charge this, but I’m not a jeweler, so who knows. I would say try to find another ring, unless you have your heart set on this one. Maybe when you go visit family or friends in the next few months they live near a jeweler who has it in stock?

That sucks! Is it possible you can look around and try on rings similar to this setting to get an idea of what it’s like? If you just make sure you like the general style/shape, etc then maybe you can order this exact ring without trying this particular one. I feel like even if I were going to pay the money to get the setting to the store, I’d still look at similar stuff first- just so I don’t waste my money.

i think a 40 dollar deposit is reasonable to have them ship in a ring that they probably cannot return back to the designer.

I agree that this is not unheard of. Bridal shops do the same thing if you want them to bring in a sample dress that they don’t have in the shop. That being said.. there are soooo many similar looking rings out there. I’m quite sure you can find something you love without having to put down money before you are sure. Can you post a pic of the ring you love so people can suggest similar styles/designers that might work for you.

Thank you guys for all the help! I am fairly new so I just wasn’t sure if that was normal! I am attaching a picture, this is the best one I could find because the website wont let me save the pictures to my computer. You can see it at http://www.kirkkara.com Carmella collection, Style 1001DG-R if you want to see it closer up! 🙂

I know that Belden will make wax replica of a custom ring free of charge. The saleswoman at Belden said it would take 2 weeks since the wax ring is carved by hand. I almost had this done, but then changed my mind, so I am not sure about the quality.
I also know that Jared offered to ship a ring from another Jared store to one closer to me in order for me to try on the ring. This was free of charge. Although they claimed it would only take a week, yet a month later they randomly called my bf’s cell and left a msg saying the ring had arrived and was available for me to try on. Luckily my bf had already purchased the ring of my dreams from another store (not Belden or Jareds) so I didn’t care at that point.
