I think Playa Del Carmen is your best bet. We did go to a little market place in Akumel and found some nice authentic Mexican items. For better shopping we made a day trip into Playa Del Carmen. The Mayan has less shopping than the Yucatan and Cancun by far.

Not much shopping in Riviera Maya.  You need to go to Playa del Carmen or Cancun for any real shopping.  But also don’t expect to find much.  It’s the same trinkets you find all over Mexico and the same designer clothes you find here (and not really any cheaper).

20-25 mins for us. We took an air-conditioned coach, which I would reccomend.

We honeymooned in Cancun and last time I was in Mexico we stayed in Akumel – and honestly, we never even desired to go shopping. Most of the stuff (including jewelry) we could get at the hotel for a better price! My brother was in Playa a year ago and they said the same thing, that their shopping day was a waste of time because it was the same stuff at the hotel… I would rather be on the beach an extra day 🙂

agree with mrs.peters.to.be… that’s the best way to get into town and there’s not really any high end stuff- although I did get a very nice piece of jewelry in playa del carmen. cute boutiques and nice restaurants for a day away from the resort. we stayed at maroma resort and spa and i believe it was like 20 minutes from playa del carmen

I was just in Riveria Maya last year at this time (it was PERFECT weather, too!) — we took a quick cab ride to Playa Del Carmen and the shopping was great.  If I remember right the cab ride was only 15-20 minutes…not far at all!
