So I’m a total shoe-aholic and love me some rockin’ heels and wedges – however, my FH is only about an inch taller than I am and I don’t want to be towering over him throughout the wedding. I had him try on his dress shoes (they have a slight platform, as most men’s dress shoes do), put on a pair of 1-inch heels and had us both stand in front of a mirror, haha. Basically, the conclusion was that 1 inch is the highest I can afford to go with my wedding shoes, given that my hair will be half-up and I may be wearing a veil.
Small problem: I actually find it easier to walk in say 3-inch heels/wedges than something lower. I feel like if it’s a lower heel, my toes hit the ground in a weird, not-too-sexy way – does that make any sense? Flats, though, I have no real issues with, since the way you walk in them is different from in heels. On the other hand, I feel like at least some heel, or a cute pair of low wedges, would look better than just flats or dressy sandals.
I don’t necessarily need my actual wedding shoes yet, but I do need to know how high they’ll be so that I can have my dress made in the correct length. And because I’m having my dress custom-made, I will need to give my seamstress the final design and measurements by the end of the year (yeah, okay, I still have SOME time…) TIA for all your help 🙂

I have a short FI too, so I totally feel your shoe-pain. I’m going with a pair of flats, just because they’re easier to wear (it’s not really the height for me, but the clumsiness).
I’m guessing you’ll be more comfortable in flats too, since you said they’re easier to walk in.
If you have a long dress, the only time you’ll see your shoes is in photos, so I don’t think it’s worth it to wear short heels.

Go for your high shoes! Unless there’s a specific reason to why you want to be shorter or the same height as your FH then I’d just go with whatever shoes take your fancy. There’s also definitely things you can do in photos if that’s what your worried about, having your FH stand slightly behind you and things like that – your photographer should be able to work that out if you’re worried. I ended up being 1.5 inches taller than DH on our wedding day – I thought it would bug me lots in photos and it doesn’t at all.

FI is about 2 inches taller than me, but really that’s just a convenient excuse for me to wear flats because I hate wearing heels. I know they look good but I’ve always found them uncomfortable for long periods of time. It sounds like you will be more comfortable in flats, and as long as you are wearing a long dress, people honestly won’t even be able to tell the difference between you wearing flats and a 1″ heel.

Thanks for all the input so far! 🙂 I guess I should start looking for some nice flats… I sort of hate the look of ballet flats though, I only ever wear pointy flats. Does anyone have recommendations for cute/hot peeptoe or strappy flats?
ETA: Our colours are white, silver/greys and deep red, if that helps!

I love these and they come in white, silver/grey, and deep red:
Plus they’re only $30! I have them bookmarked for myself as well.

There’s those cute Croc flats that are peep toe (I keep recommending them everywhere cause you can’t buy them yet in the UK and I’m living vicariously through all you Bees!). I think the style was called “Tamilia” or something similar.

I’m glad you asked this question! My FI and are are the same height. I don’t want to be taller than him, so I’ll probably end up in flats (that’s what I usually wear anyway). I’m just hoping I don’t look too short in my dress!
@pb and j: Awesome link! Thanks for sharing!

@pb and j: Those look like a definite contender; bonus for coming in all three colours (and the right shade of red too, w00t!) – thanks! Bookmarking them also 🙂
@littlemissmoo: Do you mean these shoes? Because they look terrific and non-Crocs and are currently on sale! Must… control… myself…
@staceynrick: What is your dress like? I think if your FH is the same height as you are, you definitely won’t look too short next to him, in pictures and in real life.

I have the total opposite problem! My FI is extremely taller than me – but I am still going to wear fancy slippers. I have never been comfortable wearing heels – and I know I would feel horrible wearing them on my wedding. SO I am just bypassing that.
I think you should wear whatever you want! Especially if you are already taller than FI then it shouldn’t matter if you get even taller. My parents look OK in their wedding pictures – my mom is 5’9″ and my dad is 5’1″. Hehe wierd couple.
Good luck! 🙂

I am a high heel girl too. And for some reason I just dont like low heels. If i couldnt wear 3+ I would pick flats.

i’m wearing flats for the following reasons
they are more comfortable
my dress is long so ppl will barely notice
i’m 5ft 11 and a couple inches taller than FI
i never wear heels anyway!

@Cant_wait: Thank you! I forgot about endless.com; heading over to check out the rest of their shoes now 🙂
Any more suggestions, ladies? I think the problem for me is going to be looking for “the One” feeling with my shoes and not my dress… It’s a good thing I have over a year to adjust to the fact that, after rocking the 3+ inch heels and wedges for years (I have so many gorgeous ones in my shoe-bookshelf!), I won’t be wearing them for my wedding, haha.

I had to wear flats too because of the same reason..I could get away with maybe 1 or 2 inch heels but wanted to be sure I looked shorter than my hubby!. These were mine!
