@madtownbee:  So your FMIL wants you to buy a present for your FI’s cousin’s future wife? That you’ve met once? Um, no.

No, you don’t have to nor need to buy a gift.

if you are going to the shower, bring a gift.  if you are not going, i wouldn’t buy one.

@ajillity81:  Agree totally.

I think it’s a nice gesture to send a gift, basically, it looks incredibly generous of you. Though you totlly don’t need to. I think it’s up to you. I’d probably go with “do I know what I would get easily” and “can I afford it” if yes to both, then go for it, in that it’ll reflect well. If no to either, don’t bother. Also, you don’t want to end up with people expecting you to buy everyone ever a gift, that’d be awkward and annoying.

You certainly are under no obligation to buy a gift, but unless finances are an issue I’d probably buy something in the $20-25 range.  It’s not a lot of money to make your FMIL (and her family) happy.

I wouldn’t. If you weren’t originally invited and you barely know her, I dont see the need to really.

Are you going to the shower?  If you are not going, I wouldn’t get a gift.  If you are going, you probably don’t want to show up empty handed.  Even something small and inexpensive would suffice.

I’d ask FI or FMIL to do it at this point.
