I’m having an internal debate with whether or not to go try on wedding dresses.
As of right now, I am planning on wearing my grandmother’s wedding dress (my mom wore it, too). I love the dress and am honored and excited to wear it…I love that it has sentimental value to all three of us, I love the style, the lace, etc. (Sorry, no pics scanned in yet.) The only thing is…I can’t help but feel that I’m missing out on something really special and bride-like by going and trying on brand new dresses at a bridal shop. So, here’s the problem: I am afraid that if I go try on dresses, I will find something I love more than my grandmother’s dress. I know my grandmother and my mom would understand if I found something I liked more (three of my cousins have turned her down already) but since I can remember, I’ve been looking forward to wearing her dress. Plus, I didn’t really budget for a dress.
So do you think I should go to a bridal salon to try on dresses and get the "bride" feeling, or just forget about it and stick with the original plan?

It seems you really want to try on dresses. I suggest you try on your grandmother’s dress first take pictures of yourself in it with your mom and grandma for the memories. Then carry that picture with you when you try on other dresses. If possible take your mom and grandma with you so they can experience it with you as well. If you find a dress you love more than that one, at least you’ll have all those other memories with your grandmother’s dress as well.

It sounds like even though you love your Grandma’s dress, you want to have the experience of wedding dress shopping. Who can blame you–it’s fun! I think it might be nice to do a little shopping and take your mom and grandma with you. If you do find something that you can’t live without, maybe you can wear two dresses–your grandma’s for the ceremony and the new one for the reception?

Thanks, Chela. I think you’re right…I really do want to try on dresses. I’m one of those people who, in 5 years, looks back and says "I wish I had done ____." I’ve tried on the dress already – it fits me like a glove and is gorgeous and I felt really special with it on!
