I never considered it until my mom went to a relatives wedding at the same venue I am using, and she started insisting that I use one. Keep in mind that I am not one to cave to other people's insisting, but now I am thinking it would be a good idea. I originally wanted to DIY everything. Here are some details:

    • Ceremony and reception in same venue
    • My venue is booked solid so decorations must be put up day of and taken down day of.
    • I am coming from out of town (one side of Canada to the other, I am moving to BC) so a lot of DIY would have to be done within the 2 weeks I'll be in St. John's.
    • Other big costs: my venue only costs $500 (parents paying for catering), DJ $250-$300, photographer $1295 for an amazing package, dress $1174. So costs have been decent thus far. Cake is being made by an aunt.

What is your vision for your wedding? How much decor are you planning?

Don't forget that DIY can be completed ahead of time and shipped to NL.

ps one small correction- Those of us in BC would not agree that Quebec is "one side of Canada"! That leaves Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta , BC, the Yukon , Northwest Terriotories and Nunavet out of Canada entirely!

I diyed pretty much my entire wedding and we only had 3 hours to set up our venue before the ceremony began. Also had reception and ceremony at same venue. We managed everything without a coordinator. And nothing went amiss. If you have extra $, a day-off coordinator may be helpful. This is someone who just helps make sure everything runs smoothly on the day of your event, and doesnt really help with all the planning beforehand.

@julies1949: I am moving to Victoria in December.

I like the look of lots of white lights and tulle, colour coordination, etc.

Here's a pic from the wedding my mom went to at my venue yesterday. A little blurry.

Thanks for the opinions/voting. I'm pretty much decided on yes, I want one. I've emailed her and will hopefully hear back soon!

I'm a coordinator so I of course say yes ;) but no seriously I'm DIY'ing everything!  We're having an evening ceremony and I'll be there to supervise everyone in the morning but I'm having a day-of coordinator/director to make sure everything runs smoothly while I'm getting ready and while I'm visiting with guests.  One thing I will say is that if you don't you also will need to delegate someone to talk to all the vendors and tell them where you want them set up, etc. Good luck!
