I'd say wait to order it. I had a simlar issue with my dress. I ordered it in the size that would work and by the time it came in (and I was 30 pounds lighter) it was ridiculously too big. So much so, that I had to exchange it for 2 sizes smaller and even that had to be altered to be smaller (after another 10 pounds).
ETA: I'd also talk to whomever is doing the alterations and ask for their opinion. Everyone told me that taking it IN was easier than taking it out - but when it was all said and done, the seamstress said she could have taken it out, if necessary (it would just take a little more work). It depends on the dress, what seams would need to be taken out, and the fabric, etc - but they should be able to easily tell you.
Also - the dress shop owner said she never likes to order a smaller size for brides when they say they are losing weight because it rarely happens.
I would be most worried about a timeline, how long it will take to get the dress in and done with the alterations you may need anyway (like hemming or a bustle). It might be worth speaking to a seasmstress or two and seeing how easy the dress is to take out/let in - since usually you have some wiggle room either way. Not to say you won't lose the weight, but I hate buying clothes that way. :\
I'd wait. Especially since you're already losing weight. If you were going to "start" getting healthier, I'd say just get it now.
I think you should wait. Looks like you have plenty of time.
The seamstress at the shop where I bought my dress said she has had brides lose up to 100 pounds yes I said 100 and she still could alter the dresses to fit. IDK if that's true but I hope so. I plan to lose a lot.
Thank you all so much. I do want to wait, I just feel badly going to the store AGAIN and still not buying the darned thing. I'm sure people work on comission and I always feel so awkward when I walk out without a dress!
I definitely would never order a dress in a smaller size because believe me, I've had great plans to become less of a fatass in the past that have fallen through, LOL!
Thanks for all the advice about talking with a seamstress, I'll make sure I get some good photos this weekend and hopefully find someone to consult with sooner than later. I'm buying from David's Bridal and haven't heard a single good thing about their alterations department, so I'm planning on taking the dress elsewhere for the bustle and any other alterations I may need.
ETA: I didn't mean to imply that a size 12 is a "fatass" - just that I've been bigger and smaller and haven't always followed "the planned schedule" in the past, haha!
I'd wait to see where you are a few months from now.
What are you doing to lose the weight?
@kaylee26: I'm hopping back on the ol' Weight Watchers train! I had success with the (old) program last year but then just sort of gave up and decided to eat everything in the world. I've also been laid up at home for the past 2 months with a broken ankle (I got the cast off last week and am now walking, though not easily!) so I've really packed on an extra few. I could stand to lose 15-20 pounds. I'll be using the old program again since I don't plan to actually go to meetings or sign up officially since I have all the tools I need already.
By the way, I broke my ankle playing hockey, which I used to do twice a week and have been doing for my whole life. So my now that "usual" activitity is gone, I was hoping to just start walking (more and more as it stops hurting so much).
@Juliepants: Ouch! I hope you are getting medical attention.
Funny - I twisted my ankle badly almost a year ago. Inactivity and pampering myself led to me putting on 15-20 lbs. I took off some of that over the spring and early summer, but I've managed to put some back on since. I was just limiting sweets (especially my beloved ice cream) and doing portion control.
@kaylee26: Thank you, I am doing physio at home and trying to regain some flexibility so I can drive again. It's been slow and painful, but it is definitely improving. It's amazing how much we can pack on by sitting on the couch feeling sorry for ourselves, isn't it!? Lol!
I find that limiting sweets and watching my portions are both huge challenges. I've had a hard time with food choices as well since I've been housebound for the past 10 weeks, but hopefully that will change soon.
I'm thinking I MIGHT get the 12 this weekend if it feels right with my Mom and BMs. Even if I do lose the weight, I have "back fat" concerns, haha!
@Juliepants:Glad that you are improving!
Limiting sweets and portion control are still challenges for me, and I need to put effort in doing those things. The cold weather isn't helping.
So, tell me about the dress!
I'll just show you! This is from a couple months (and a few pounds) ago:
This is the 12. Here's the back (I believe there were a few back-fatty ones, lol, but this one looks good).
Thank you!! This is fun, I've never showed anyone my dress who wasn't standing next to me, lol.
Get the 12. You look beautiful in it. If you lose some weight, you can get it taken in.
Thank you. You know, that's probably what I will end up doing. I'm very sure that I'll lose some (I'm 5'7" and just over 160lbs now and I figure I'll end up around 150ish realistically) but it may not be enough to warrant waiting for the size 10.
Thanks again for your advice!
Yep, that sounds about right. Mine is 145 but 150 is ok, too. And, who am I kidding, I've been sitting at 160ish "happily" eating everything in sight for months. :P
I've just gotten very flabby and I have more of a belly and thighs than ever before...and my face has puffed up so that I always (ALWAYS) have double chins in photos. That will be my motivation for the weight loss - wedding pics!
I was in a very similiar situtation. They were offering me my dress for half price off the rack. It was a size 10, and it was too small. I Ccould get into it fine, but it wouldnt completly tie (you could see about an inch of skin). I still decided to buy it (this was about a month ago). This just makes me work harder to reach my goal. I am actually hoping by the time my wedding gets here (its in the summer of 2013) that I will have to take it in, lol heres to hoping!! I say go for it, it will keep you motivated!
@alyssa742: Oh nice, good for you! You have plenty of time - good luck!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WAIT!!! LOL so my experience....
Basically I fell IN LOVE with Martina Liana 260 gorgeous dress!!! It was way over what I would expect to pay for a dress $2000, so I search and found a bridal trunk show nearby and went. They actually had to bring in the dress two weeks later from the designer, the dress was just AMAZING in person and although i did not like how it fit me (as it didnt look like the model) so much i was so inlove with the dress and the trunk show disc i bought it.
I told everyone that I knew for a fact i was going to lose weight before my wedding. I was 155 height 5'2 heaviest I have been in the past 9 years and it was my ultimate goal to get to the size i was when my fiance and I first dated (although he loves me regardless) anyways everyone says the same thing.... so many brides say they will lose weight and they dont! thats all i heard. I have a large chest as well, and so i was told based on my measurements to order a 14. I say oh im losing weight, i finally get so tired of hearing it i say fine, ill order a 12 and just take it in, i am losing weight. I ordered it in beginning of april, and it arrived in july, I ended up losing 30 lbs, and i was so upset when i had to go pick that dress up because now i was a size 8.
i picked it up early august, and i walked in and everyone jaws dropped they said they had never seen this.
now i am stuck with a gorgeous dress that makes me want to cry when i see it ! lol however not only is the dress 5 sizes too big(now i am about to order a 2 or 4 corset style in my new dress since i have lost a total of 42lbs now), I also decided i wanted a totally different silouette... a mermaid... i fell in love when i saw how great i looked in that
so there are plenty reasons to wait, it will be too big, u may want a different fit or dress, alterations are going to get crazy expensive going 5 sizes or even 3 sizes down although it can be done it can also start to comprimise the shape or fit of the dress and if your dress is lace with/without embellishmnts it will cost even triple!!!
lol sorry for the rant, it really sucks now putting out all this money because everyone said it wouldnt happen so dont listen to what everyone says! you really need to look deep down inside and see how much you want this, if you are truly dedicated and can be super strict with healthy eating habits then do it! all my hard work has truly paid off, not because of the number size of the dress or the number on the scale but because now i feel fabulous!! literally get gitty when i look in the mirror because i feel hot and i am so comfortable with my body! (it also really helped me be more outgoing in the bedroom too since i feel confident now ;D) and when its all said and done if you are only able to lose 10 lbs although you shoot for 30, you will still feel that much more fabulous and sexy especially on your wedding day. Once you see the first 5 or 10 lbs come off it will get easier since you will feel fantastic!
i admit i have dieted for past 9 years and only this time i succeeded cause i made my mind up and stuck with it, and a wedding is the best motivation!
I think it's best to buy the size you are now, just in case you don't lose the weight. You don't want to stress about fitting into the dress right before the wedding! You can always get it altered if needed. That's the advice my friend gave me, I had the same question.
Thanks for posting this, I've always wondered this myself! Now I know to order and alter later!
I bought my dress thinking I would never really loose the weight, I lost 20lbs! now my dress is more than a saze too large. I picked it up today and was so sad that I didn't just wait a few more months. There isn't much I can do now, but I hope the alterations are done well!
Get the dress that fits you now. You don't want the additional stress of wondering whether or not you will lose the weight. Plus it's easier to take the size down if you do lose weight. Your dress is beautiful and really flatters your figure! In the second picture your waist and hips look tiny!
Wow I'm just seeing all these new responses now - thank you very much, ladies!
Don't worry, I definitely wouldn't buy a 10 if I couldn't fit it just because of all the horror stories you hear about girls not losing the weight they anticipated losing. It was more of a question of buying a 12 now and possibly altering it later, or waiting a couple months and buying whatever fits. It's from DB, so it only takes 2-3 months to come in not 9-12 like many other places.
I've decided to wait before I order it and will probably just get it in whatever size fits me best at that appointment. If I have to have it taken in, I will.
I just re-started WW this week and am already down 5lbs! I know every week won't be like this because the first week is always kind on the scales, but it's reason enough for me to wait a little while to see what happens.
@step0106: I'm sorry you had all the dress troubles, but omg CONGRATS on the "new you"! You sound so happy and excited about how you feel now and that's inspiring.
@Phofe2774: Congrats to you, too!
And @SugerPlum, thank you for the compliments! I hope I can look like I did in those pictures on my big day. Believe me, there were a lot less flattering pics taken of me in that dress, haha, I definitely picked the best ones.
June 2nd is a wonderful day!! :) You have plenty of time sweety, wait and try on that size 10! You can do it. There is no need to pay for extra alterations when you have plenty of time to order the dress. Good luck!
Can we get an update? Have you been able to lose the weight? This showed up as a related topic for another post and I'm in the same boat. I'm hesitant to buy because I'm starting an intense weight loss program in one week from today *squeel* but my wedding is in 2.5 months... Since I know I already have to buy off the rack, I'm thinking about waiting until I've dropped the 20 lbs
I'm also trying to lose weight...my plan is to try to lose half the weight before going shopping, and then lose the other half between now and my final fitting or whenever alterations need to be done...

Hi ladies,
Yesterday, we moved our wedding back from February to June so as not to interfere with my Dad's upcoming hip replacement surgery in January. I already have a dress appointment on Sunday with my Mom and all my BMs and was planning on finally purchasing my dress.
I've been planning on losing the 15lbs I put on this past year and currently fit a size 12 dress. When I first tried it on a couple months ago, it was a teeny bit loose but the 10 would have been out of the question. Right now, I'd say a 12 fits.
Now that I'm no longer in a rush, what do you think I should do on Sunday? Go ahead and buy it in the 12, then probably need to have it taken in closer to my wedding date, or wait a few months and try it in a 10? They said the dress will only take 14 weeks to come in, so it's not like I'm in a big rush anymore.
I fear that alterations are going to be expensive, so the fewer the better. Plus, I'm worried about what the dress will look like and whether the alterations will be done well. What do you think?
