    In Mexico?

Is there anything that we'll want to do to where we'll need a car to get there?

    Somebody help me.

Either Cancun, Riviera Maya or Vallarta

We're going to Puerto Morelos, about 20 minutes south of Cancun, and we're not renting a car. It's just not worth the hassle. Apparently the bus system out there is pretty good and taxis, etc. are pretty cheap. You should do a search on Lonely Planet's forum and see what people say.

you def dont need to rent a car.. especially if you are staying in an all-inclusive, most resorts have tours of any of the main things you might want to go check out touristy (chitchen itza and whatever that other pyramid is...)

I've traveled to the Riviera Maya twice (also tow of my friends lived there for a year) and I can say from experience that if you want to go to the major tourist spots, the busses are actually very good.  Air Conditioned & on-time, much better than some buses we have here in the US (Greyhound, I'm talking to you!).  And for getting around town, as one of the other bees mentioned, you can hop in a cab for cheap.  Of course you can rent a car if you would like, BUT I would only do this is you are an experienced traveler, the roads can be bad in some areas & you really need to watch out for police looking for a bribe from unsuspecting AmericansEmbarassed.

Do not rent a car. Everywhere you'll want or need to go, a bus can take you. The drivers in Cancun are crazy. They dont care if they hit you or another car. My FI loves to drive and has no problem driving in unknown places (I hate it) but when we were in Cancun, he said there is no way he'd ever rent a car.

I heard - not sure if it's true - people in Cancun don't have car insurance so they dont care what they hit.

On our way to Walmart (in a bus), we watched a pedestrian get hit by a car that was going probably 50-70 kms (no idea what that is in miles). Our bus sat there for a few minutes after the guy got hit and he wasn't moving. For all we know, he could have been dead :-\ Once our bus left, cars were just driving around him. It took quite a while for someone to even approach him. I felt SICK to my stomach after seeing that and just wanted to go back to the resort.

There is no way I'd ever rent a car there.
