- Wedding: June 2012
Trying to decide whether to stay in our current apartment or move to another, and I love to see the poll results of our options. Both include roommates (which we have currently and don’t mind); the differences are mainly space and cost. I know it’s incredibly subjective and depends on what you value – just wondering what everyone would choose! Here are the options…
STAY (APARTMENT A): 5th floor w/ roof access
(+) We would sublease the 2nd bedroom to another person (single male, probably) and bring our portion of the rent+bills down to about $700, since we would be providing all the furnishings of the fully furnished apt. We could save up a ton of money (or even make several trips to see our parents next year).
(+) Our stuff is already here (movers would cost at least $200, maybe more, and are necessary).
(-) Share bathroom with roommate.
(-) Even though we’ve been here 9 months, the space is TINY. Darling Husband is a big guy (6’2) who plays big instruments (tuba, trombone) and we have a lot of stuff (esp. from the wedding) that fill up our tiny space. We’re both musicians – between the two of us, we have 15 or so instruments (tubas, saxes, flutes, trombones, etc). Living here, we have some…. creative storage solutions (there’s not even a closet in this apt).
(+) Incredibly close to public transit and grocery store.
(+) Roof access.
GO (APARTMENT B): master suite at ground level
(-) Rent+bills would be $1150 – obviously a big jump from $700. We can afford it, but we wouldn’t be able to save as much, and might only be able to travel home to Texas one time next year, instead of 2 or more.
(+) The place is HUGE! We can fit our current bedroom+living room into the new bedroom, and the new living room can hold at least 50 people, standing (our current one can probably hold 7, standing). The kitchen has way more storage and counter space, too, which means we could use some of our fancy new appliances that we got from the wedding that are still in boxes.
(-) All that extra space (esp. kitchen) might make Darling Husband want to buy some more furniture to fill it up…. with the higher rent, we would not be able to do that (at least, not anything nice).
(+) Private bathroom!! THREE closets in our bedroom!!
(-) 3 roommates instead of one, but they’re all single male musicians that tend to be touring or gigging a lot. They’ve lived with the owner of the lease (a friend of ours) for a while and seem like decent people; they’re not around much, anyway, and keep to themselves.
(-) A bit further from public transit, but not far.
(+) Right next to a state park and the Hudson River.
