Your Fiancé is correct Fraction Carat Sizes are a range… (in decimals / weights)

http://www.diamond.com/diamond-jewelry-education/diamond-carat-weight/

So yes a 3/4 C Diamond is going to weigh in between 0.69 and 0.82 points (1.00 points being a Full Carat)

There are a lot of great Websites on the Net to learn about Diamonds… I like the Blue Nile one best, they have an EXCELLENT Education Section = http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-and-jewelry-education

Here you can learn all about Diamonds, and play around on their Loose Diamond Exchange to get an idea of what Diamonds sell for that have different levels of the various criteria elements (the Cs) until you find one that works for you.

Personally I use Blue Nile as an information resource as I won’t buy a Diamond off the Internet… I am one who needs to see my Diamond (or Ring) in person.  But many Bees do and have.

The Ss & Cs that are part of what Diamonds & Diamond Rings are about:

  • SETTING & STYLE
  • CARAT – CUT (Shape & Quality) – COLOUR – and CLARITY
  • along with CERTIFICATION – CONFLICT FREE / CANADIAN
  • and COST …
  • the last C… COMFORT is something you truly only can experience by getting out there and trying rings on.

I highly recommend anyone looking to buy a ring that they do just that… try things on… try lots of Rings on.  This is especially so for something as important as an ERing… as just like you cannot judge a pair of jeans by a photograph… and not all jeans fit every body… neither can you rely on just “seeing” a photo of a Diamond Ring… not all Rings suit every hand.

AND this is something you are going to want to wear every.day.forever… not like a pair of jeans.  PLUS they cost a good bit of money, and are difficult to impossible to return (like a car once you drive it off the lot, a Diamond too will drop in value…)

So I’d suggest that you alone, or with your Fiancé to be make a point of consulting on this process / purchase.

My own ERing features a 3/4 CARAT (0.80 Points) GIA CERTIFIED CANADIAN Diamond… Very Good CUT Round Brilliant – F COLOUR – SI-1 CLARITY

The Feature Diamond is in a Low Cathedral Setting (didn’t want anything too high as to catch)… in 18 K White Gold, with 46 other Diamonds Rounds & Baguettes – Good CUT – G COLOUR – SI CLARITY that are channel set.

I am married now, and my Sparkly WBand has similar credentials as a 1/2 Carat 1/2 Eternity 14 K White Gold Band, with 10 Diamonds (and in the 0.45 to 0.58 ctw range)

Hope this helps,

PS… You can also learn a lot about Diamonds / Rings by hanging out around the WBee Ring Board.

I do recommend tho that BOTH you and your man do some reading & research, as the Jewellery Biz is very competitive and cut-throat.  It is also high pressure sales that preys on unsuspecting (unprepared) buyers… and most of the Store Clerks get paid on Commission so what they have as their best interests might not be totally inline with your own

@crisy003:  I love the one you picked! Even more so if you add heart details 😉 Here is my 3/4 carat ring, although my finger is a little smaller than you asked to see. Figured we all like ring porn regardless and it might give you an idea!

Glad I could help.

GORGEOUS Ring

We too dealt with a long-standing Family Run Jewellery Store with an On-site Goldsmith and we had a wonderful experience as well… especially so vs the Chain Stores at the Mall.

When I picked out my Setting (it was a Trunk Show that day)… it too had a 1.00 Carat CZ in it as a place holder… we knew we wanted a Diamond that was between 0.50 and 1.00… I thought 1.00 was too big (READ – Too Expensive) so we went for a 3/4 Carat (0.80 C) that had better specs.

No Regrets… I LOVE MY RING

And the difference between 0.80 and 1.00 is pretty insignificant…

I’ve had more than one GF ask me if it was a Carat.

On my size 7 Finger… I’d say that visually that the 3/4 C fills up about 1/3 of the width of the finger… and that is about right based on this other interesting Diamond Buying Resource

Hope this helps,

@crisy003:  .8ct center on a 7.5 size ring (my finger is closer to a 7-7.25)
