Hi Girls - i'm in a rut trying to figure out the dress. I'd love a 1950's style tea length dress but so far all are out of my budget.
Can someone post what their dress looks like?
I am not wearing a tea length gown/dress; however, I did contmeplate wearing one. Here are the two that I was considering and also a picture of the gown that I am going with and the bolero that I will be wearing with my gown. Each of the gowns are from Justing Alexander. I am 40++, and I think that if you look good/great in something, you should wear it. Who dictates "age appropriate" anyway???
I totally agree! Wear what you love & the dress that makes you twirl.
This was one of the Bee's dresses and now she sells them on etsy. I agree with Noritake, wear what you want, I will be 40 when we get married and I am wearing a ballgown.
I thought about a tea length gown but my fiance is much shorter than I am and so I would have to wear flats which would make my legs look short and dumpy.
So I am going with an afternoon wedding with a lavish high tea reception with a very vintage feel - we are having music from 1920's through the crooners and some whimsical touches as well.
Here is my dress (with me in it and on the model - the sample is too small so it does not hang right)
I will be 42 (still not sure how THAT happened) on Sunday . . .
Oh btw I tried on the "age appropriate" dresses and they made me look like I was in my 40's and very mature
Ehhhh not good - wear what looks best on you and makes your heart glad!!!
Although I love shorter dresses and always thought I would wear one if I got married, I will be wearing something floor length -- but without a train -- to my wedding.
Since my dress is figure flattering, I would call it age appropriate :-) I will still be 41 when I get married in 107 days from today. :-)
@noritake22: Love the second dress!!!! If I wasn't already married, I'd buy that one in a second!
@stacycats: Thank you! I love his gray hair!!
I wore a Nataya dress and I turned 50 the day after the wedding. Nataya dresses are usually around $200 - $300 and have a soft romantic feel to them.
The "appropriate" dress for a 40+ bride is one that flatters her figure and makes her feel beautiful and special -- same as any other age category! I originally wanted tea length, but decided against it, not because of my age (44), but because I thought the style was not the best with my short/petitie figure. Good luck! Post photos of you in your dress when you choose one. -JB
P.S. I noticed that the new David's Bridal dress releases contain several reasonably-priced tea-length gowns. Also, Dolly Couture sells discounted samples on eBay. Keep an eye out for those auctions if you like her gowns.

@sonomagal: Such a pretty dress - what color flowers are you thinking?
@noritake22: Everytime I see those JA dresses, I drool! They're so amazing!
I agree with the other posters, wear what you like and what looks good on you!
Hi Guys - I'm back. Thanks so much for all your posts.
I've tried to find a shop with the Justin Alexander dress (2nd image in first response) but to no avail - all the shops listed on his website have yet to receive their sample. Does anyone know the retail price of this dress?
I tried a great Galina tea length gown at Davids Bridal but want to wait and try some more. I'm going to make an appt. with Dolly Couture after x-mas. I love her styles but find the majority of brides appear to need more alterations (odd comment I know, just think many of them look ill fitted to the figure).
My 1950's look is my goal. We are now getting married in an e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y formal and HUGE church so I'm hoping to add a bolero and veil to make it appropriate. Please keep the ideas coming and anyone who knows the sticker price on the JA, please let me know. Thanks!

@jadeblue: How elegant yet natural! I love the dress, your hair, and your make up. Did you get it done professionally?
I am 41 and wore a ballgown. I agree that you should go with what you love and makes you feel like a bride. Since you mentioned you wanted a 50s look for a very formal church, I included a picture of Pronovias Iman. It looks very similar to two of my aunts' dresses, who were married in the late 50's. I probably would have bought this dress if I had seen it before I bought mine.
I totally agree with Jadeblue. It is what works best with you body that will be the more appropriate one for you.
I will be 40 in Jan and not married until May 2012 but this will be my dress... (ya I know.. I'm a bit of a pre-planner!)
Ps..... my wedding is going to be a DW and the third pic is of his uniform only he will have a white belt/sash
Still a newbie at this site.
This is his uniform
hi y'all - i booked an appt. with Dolly Couture for January. Fingers crossed one of hers will work for me. I'm having a tought time finding vintage tea length styles in L.A. - and my budget isn't helping. :( Fingers crossed. Attached is an image of my favorite Dolly bride ever.
Both of us were over 40 when we got married. I (the one on the left) was 56, and NotFroofy was 41.

Everyone (& their dresses) look gorgeous! I agree with all the posters - where whatever you feel comfortable in and makes you feel beautiful! I wore a white traditional dress but cut off the train for my beach wedding.
Gorgeous dresses everyone!! I'm 44 and this is my Maggie I wore for our DW--

Could you find a dress you like and have it made? Here are some ideas:
Ian Stuart

Linda Asaf

This one is on etsy.com to be made:

This is an ebay seller:

Here are a couple more:

Ivanka Trump in Vera Wang:

I also like Cymbline Paris. They have some nice modest, yet fashionable styles that won't break the bank. Not quite what you described, but they are some new ideas :)

Hi Bee keepers!!! I have an appt. to try the justin alexander on tomorrow night. Wish me luck!!! :)
@unixfairy: Thanks. I am thinking of colorful flowers with purple, magenta, pink, orange, ... Jewel tones that bring outr the amethyst in the lace. These are the inspiration bouquets
.
HOLY SMOKES!! I hope I look as amazing as you guys when I'm in my 40's!! congrats on your weddings!
Hi Bees -
I went to downtown L.A. last night to try the Justin Alexander dress. Store had postponed the appointment by a day and that was alright with me. I figured either she had another bride coming in or the dress sample hadn't arrived. Right before I left work, I looked up the address on Yelp- I wasn't happy with what I saw. You can read reviews about the store here:

I knew the store wasn't going to be posh but I was even more disappointed that I was left to sit under flourescent lights for more than 10 minutes without any explanation. I knew something was wrong - the dress wasn't there. We had to wait for a man to deliver it from another location. No lie, he showed up with a box as if it just arrived from UPS. Since it took so long for him to arrive, there was no time to steam dress so she had me try it on, wrinkles and all. While the dress looked good on me (sorry no photos), I would be really really REALLY hesitant to order it to arrive by April from this vendor.
Here's hoping my appointments with the "fancier bev hills/pasadena" stores go better than this one.
