I used to have acrylics but they were rough on my nails. Ive tried to go natural but my nails always break and dont grow, no matter what I do.

We moved to a new town almost a year ago and I tried a new nail girl here, she only does gel nails. The gels hold up amazingly well, far better then the acrylics and with way less damage to my natural nails. I took them off for a brief period and my nails were still healthy. When i first had the acrylics off, my nails were paper thin, tore easily and were sensitive.

Here is my latest sping inspired gel mani:

MissHarleyBlue:  I’m on a break from acrylics at the moment but I do LOVE having them. I love that they always look perfect and I don’t need to constantly file/re-paint them!

This is when I have them done.. I miss them now haha

Here are my acrylic nails. Sorry for the horrible (and huge) pic! I love having my nails done. I know it’s kinda horrible for them, but I have horrible nails to begin with, so lose/lose.

SupermansSweetheart:  Can you explain the difference between gel and acrylic? Every time I go to get my nails done I ask for gels and I swear they still put on acrylic and then do the LED/gel nailpolish not a gel manicure! I’ve asked 4 times now and still have gotten tips w/ acrylic every single time! What do I need to say to these people to actually get gel nails?

I do acrylic nails and gel polish on top because it stays shiney & lasts way longer.

@FutureDrAtkins: True gel nails use only the gel polishes (base, color, top coat) and are cured under a UV lamp. If the salon is using any form of powder or the plastic tips (I’ve had this experience too- they use the acrylic powders to do the french mani, and then put a clear gel top coat on), it’s acrylic. Ask the salon to see their selection of gel color polishes (likely from OPI or Gel-lish)- if they don’t have any, they can’t actually do a gel mani.

Gel manis are so ridiculously expensive, I wound up investing in a high quality at-home gel system (from OPI) and it’s already paid for itself.

Commenting to follow. I always ask for gel, and end up with just pink and white acrylic.
