Mr. S and I are buying my mother's house next spring. It's a nice little house but it needs a lot of updates. As part of the deal, my mom is going to semi-redo the kitchen: she's buying new floors and countertops and she and I are going to paint the walls and refinish the cabinets.
I'm trying to figure out what it is that I want as far as finishes, colors, etc. and I have no idea. So I figured I'd put the word out to the hive and see if I could find some inspiration.
Oh, fun!! You don't want to see my kitchen, it's about 1/2 the size of our coat closet and can only fit one person at a time!
@moderndaisy: That's what our current kitchen is like. We moved from an apartment with a huge kitchen to a house with a tiny kitchen, and it was SUCH a mistake.
Okay so I've posted this on like, at least 2 other threads... but I LOVE our kitchen and since you asked.... heh.
What I loved most about it was dark wood cabinets + island + stainless steal. I painted it bright green because... I dunno I just always wanted a bright green kitchen. Love. :)
(Also, SO exciting that you're shopping! We had so much fun with it)
ETA: the photo doesn't really show the color as well as I'd like. In person the green is brighter, almost exactly the color of a granny smith apple
I've posted it before but I love it so I will post it again...
We will be painting what little wall there is eventually but the house is just 5 months old so we are waiting a bit. We're giving in and painting our family room this month though because builders beige is booooring!!

I'm basically obsessed with any kitchen that has carrera marble countertops and white cabinets. I guess that makes me an ice queen.
@CorgiTales: Beautiful kitchen!
Here is our kitchen before we moved in. We now have a black 3 door refridge in here.

Oh i'll have to come back to this! We recently had floors put in and our kitchen looks really good!
here's ours - its not huge, but the space is used well.

(please excuse the mess!!!!)
@ModernDaisy – my aunt and uncle lived in NYC for decades and in their first apartment, the kitchen was so tiny that it had one of those folding doors like go in front of a closet on it! It didn’t have a full size stove either, and could only fit one person at a time. The first dinner my aunt had to make her new MIL (my grams) was Thanksgiving dinner – in that closet of a kitchen - talk about pressure!!!!
Before and After.
My DH and I got to pick everything! The only thing we couldn't agree on was the backsplash. He wanted travertine, I wanted glass mosaic. So we did both!
And here's a pic from inside the kitchen looking into the dining room.
LOOOOVE these kitchens!!! Here's ours, we didn't get to design it but those who did I think did a nice job! We love it. PS Don't mind one of our furbabies, Gabby. :)

@CanAmBride: you are a girl after my own heart! Every room in my house is a different shade of blue and green. I heart those colors!!!
My kitchen is the same color as Corgi Tales, but not as bright (it actually is almost the exact color of her picture). called Painted Basket my Behr, so gives you no indication of what the color actually looks like
. And we have like a medium brown color cabinet, the same finish as gabrielle's but a little darker. I will have to take a pic when I get home and show you. And our appliances are white.
actually I had one on my phone, this is before we moved in, so a little messy. That's our home inspector filling out the inspection paperwork
Ha...I will have to come back to this. I have been in my home for 10 years so it's time for a kitchen re-do. I am getting the floor tiled next week and then granite countertops and travertine backsplashes. I CAN'T WAIT! Linoleum and formica suck after a while...it never seems to get as clean after several years.
oh and that's not really what the floor looks like, it was just old laminate covering the floor to protect it while they were finishing everything.
We love our kitchen. We put the backsplash in this summer (it was my birthday gift from The Guy) and we finally feel like the kitchen is finished:
Oooh, I'm so jealous. We moved into a house built in 1954, and I'm pretty sure the kitchen is all original minus a paint job on the cabinets. :-( There's no space, no dishwasher, and I have a mustard orange sink! Although we did get an AWESOME deal on a side by side fridge/freezer to replace the fridge with an internal gallon sized ice box in the bottom. Even though our stove is so old and looks it, I kind of love it (minus it being electric) and it works awesome! We put a kitchen cart where the table is for a bit more storage and counter room.
I have NO idea when we can redo it, but I'm eagerly awaiting that day!
Ours was picked and installed by the builder, but I love love love it, I would recommend granite hands down for a counter, so durable! We picked black appliances over stainless due to the fact that all of our friends with kids and pets are constantly complaining about finger and nose prints on the stainless (something to keep in mind if you want to have kids!)

Since this picture, we have gotten a new black coffee/espresso maker that lives on the island, so the main wall looks a lot less cluttered! We have also gotten rid of the blue/green glass bottles on the ledge over the fridge, still looking for something to go there, and there is a chrome clock made of kitchen utensils over the pantry!
@OttawaBride2011: Thanks - we love it too :)
We're in London, ON and our builder is one of The Guy's clients. The Guy represents a lot of builders, so he has become familiar with all of them and we picked the best of the bunch to build our house. He's a fairly small builder and pays huge attention to detail - super nice guy too, he and his wife are coming to the wedding! We picked out every single detail in the kitchen, but it helps that our builder works with great suppliers.
All of your kitchens are amazing! This makes me want to own a house so I can decorate a kitchen...and then I will severely regret it the first time the garbage diposal spits up gunk. :D
@hergreenapples: Awesome! We went with a smaller builder too, I think they're only in Ottawa, it's Holitzner and we found them great to deal with!
Here's a pic of our kitchen (we've since added an over the rang microwave and taken down the ugly white fan):
@Ms Mini: SO TRUE about the stainless appliances! We didn't know that when we picked ours and I just loved the look of stainless steel. But they are a huuuuuuuge PITA to keep clean. I don't know that our next appliances will be stainless. (But they are pretty when they're clean!)
Ours is small because we have a little wartime Cape Cod. I'm enjoying this thread; good idea Sloth!
@OttawaBride2011: Small builders are the best!
I love your backsplash and your cabinets (I think they're similar to mine!).
@CorgiTales: I have bisque colored appliances right now but plan to upgrade to the Satina appliances. You get the look of stainless steel...without the fingerprints. I love the look of stainless stell...but I wouldn't love cleaning appliances every five minutes.
...on a side note. The contractor came to measure my counters for my granite countertops...gee whiz it's costly!!
We live in a 30+ year old home with all original cabinets and recently repainted our them + the walls. A whole new kitchen wasn't in the budget, but wow what a difference some paint + new knobs can make! Anyway, I love having a bright all-white kitchen!
These kitchens look great! I wish the hubby and I would find a house but it appears that renting may be the most logical option for us at this point :-(
Corgi, I effing LOVE your kitchen.Seriously, I'm drooling over here.
I really like that stainless steel pot/wine rack you have, It looks great!
I am in the middle of overhauling my kitchen (because I totally hated it). I did a whole lot of Google-fu before figuring out what I loved/hated about kitchens, which I found really helped--I have a file on my computer full of inspiration pics that I refer to often :)
FH picked everything out on his own right before we started dating, from the tile to the appliances to the cabinets. I think he did a great job and I love our kitchen. :)
Also, behind where the camera would be in this picture is a large, 10 person picnic style table. So we have two kitchen tables.
here is mine! sorry about the crappy cell phone pics :) its small but i love it!! (we hadnt put the bottom doors on the cabinets when i took this....) oh and the other pic is what it looked like when we bought this house.... it was a foreclosure and they took everything!!! appliances, caninets, lighting fixtures, you name it, it was in pretty bad shape!!!
We are in a new build -Brookfield built home and couldn't be happier -here is our kitchen!
Going to change the colour of the outlet's/outlet covers, and can't wait to paint -everything is still builder's white!
I don't have any pictures, but if you have any questions about anything, PM me! My dad builds luxury kitchens for a living, and I've worked for him on and off for 6 years, so I have access to an unlimited landmine of information!
