I'll share! :) I didn't want a diamond for a few reasons -- I wanted something a little more quirky and bright, and I wanted something more affordable. I was thinking along the lines of citrines and garnets while my fiance liked topaz and sapphire. We found an opal ring I loved but I did some research and found out it's not exactly ideal for the cold temperatures where I live.

So, I ended up with an amethyst ring (with a few little tiny Canadian diamonds along the sides). It wasn't one of the stones we had discussed but my FI liked the three-stone design and now that I have it, I love it.
Isn't she a beaut?! It's a peridot, which is my my absolute favorite color and shade of green.

Diamonds never appealed to me either. As a kid I was always way more fascinated by my mother's sapphire ring than her diamond bands, and whenever I pictured a diamond on my finger, it just never seemed right.
So DH and I decided on green tourmalines. They're pleochroic, so they change what shade of green they are depending on the light source and angle, and I'd always loved tourmalines since I was a kid (big crystal, rock and gem fanatic). Oh, and did I mention green's my favorite colour? :)
My engagement ring when I first got it:

With our wedding bands:

I actually always thought I wanted a diamond because it was what every one else had until my FI brought up the idea of a gemstone ring. I fell in love but never imagined that he would design something as amazing as he did for my engagement ring. A family friend of my FI was vacationing in Thailand and he asked them to bring back a sapphire from one of the sapphire mines. She found a 2.1 carat stone and he used it to make my ring. I love that there is a story behind it and that he personalized it. :)
PS - All of your rings are amazing!!! :)
Technically I was proposed to with no ring (my request) but after taking some flack my FI decided he wanted me to have one...and after searching and changing my mind a zillion times, I have my lovely CZ sparkler! I'll be 'upgrading' in a few years to something in palladium to match our will-be wedding bands, but for now it's perfect!

@butterfli_beauty: i love that ring!!! it looks like the one from once upon a time. once i saw it i fell in love with it.
I have posted mine all over, but here's a new one of my ruby!
This is a picture of mine and my FI - we both have an Engagement ring. Mine is Emerald and pink sapphire and his is Emerald and yellow sapphire. They were custom made
Mine is a ruby with a diamond halo. I did have a diamond solitaire & lost it.
So once I looked long enough & made my mind up I just really wanted a gemstone. I looked mainly at citrines, emeralds & rubies. I wanted something different. Something unique & magical!

@Angkinah: ahh!! I love the emerald! It's such a nice deep green. It's really special!
Here is my blue sapphire with channel set side stones along with my wedding band both are set in white gold.
@jrapril02: love it! I never even thought of doing gemstone, but looking at your beautiful sapphire it makes me drool. So pretty!
I've posted this on other threads, but it seems to fit here too. Moissanite center stone with sapphire side stones....
I love looking at these! Here's my pearl :) I decided didn't want a diamond when I started researching them and looking at price tags. It didn't seem worth it to me, I wanted something a little more unique and pearls just kind of say dainty and classy to me. I am neither dainty nor classy but it's always fun to pretend!
mine is moissy with sapphires, i love love love love gemstone rings! We went with moissy to be more "traditional" but I would have been just as happy with a morganite or a yellow sapphire or golden citrine.
Here's mine! I didn't want any type of stone, so I asked him to get me something unique. I love it! Thumbs up to everyone who chooses something that they like instead of going with the current traditional diamond ring.
@likelimeade: So great to see I'm not the only one who opted for no stone! I'm also not a fan of diamonds, or rings in general, really, and I never thought I'd want an engagement ring - I used to think I would prefer to wear a wedding band on a chain around my neck. But I know I've found the right guy because I genuinely want to wear a ring from him!
Just one, though - no need for an e-ring and a band. So we decided to get custom-designed wedding bands, since we were only going to buy two rings rather than three.
It's white gold, with twisting vines up the sides and a trinity knot designed to look like a rose in the center. Additional trinity knots on the sides look like leaves (green gold) and there are little sprigs of wheat underneath the rose knot. So happy with it! I seriously did not expect to get this excited about a ring ... but I'm glad that I am!
I love these threads. I'm similar to @theredhead in that when we first started looking at rings, I thought I wanted a diamond because I didn't know that there was anything else that you could have as an engagement ring. But then my FH brought up the idea of a colored gemstone because I love the color of deep rich purple. I loved the idea!
At first he was looking at purple diamonds, but they were really expensive and rare. But then he found purple sapphires and then my beauty, a violet sapphire. I'm in love... I love that my stone is unique and rare.

Sapphire over here! Lovely rings ladies, they are all beautiful!
Love everyones beautiful rings!
@cardus: I love your sapphire! Every time I see it I think "how lovely!"
Here is my Blue Moonstone :) (lol please ignore my nails and the macbook...not the best overall shot but a really good picture of what the stone does when the light hits it)

@FiftiesDoll3: Oh, I love it! Are there diamonds on the sides of the moonstone, too? I haven't put my contacts in yet so I can't tell lol. Either way I adore moonstone and your ring looks so romantic.
All of these rings are gorgeous. I've posted mine all over the place, but I'm still in love with it. Just turned all the raw materials into the jeweler this week so he can create FI's custome wedding band. His will have an orange sapphire in the center.

@starla: Thank you very much! :) The band has small diamond accents down the sides. Your ring is also very lovely! Such a pretty purple and a pretty setting!

So who else was proposed to with a non-diamond engagement ring??
My story: I could never really imagine myself wearing a diamond ring, but I couldn't think of any alternatives that I liked more. Then, one night I had a dream where I was proposed to with a pearl ring. I woke up, looked up pearl rings online and that was it. I love my engagement ring so much and re-fall in love with it every day! Show me your non-diamond engagement rings!
