We’re having a bitch of time trying to find FI’s wedding day attire. He’s a bigger guy so he’s not able to pull off just any suit. We’ve checked a number of stores and everything that they have in chocolate brown (which is the color we want the guys to wear) looks… well, crappy.
I can tell he’s starting to feel a little self concious about his body. We’re both starting to stress since we’re now 4 months out and we really haven’t made any concrete decisions as far as the guys apparel goes.
I’d love to see some pictures of the plus size grooms out there. Maybe it will give us a better idea of the type of suit/tux (preferably suit) that we should be looking for. Also, if you have any suggestions for where we could find a chocolate brown suit in regular sizes as well as big and tall, that would be fantastic. Mens Wherehouse is out. We went there yesterday and it was a total fail.

This is an awesome thread. J is definitely a plus size groom (for now at least). We’ve both been working out to try and lose weight before the wedding, but are having a HARD time getting started (weight dropping that is). It’s really strange that neither of us have lost much when we’ve been going 4 times a week for about 45-60 minutes.
I know we definitely have time, but you also never know what can happen a year and change from now. So, I’m very interested in seeing what other plus size grooms have worn.

I don’t know if I’d consider my guy plus size but he definitely has a tummy and it was hard finding him a suit. We also had 2 groomsmen who were definitely big & tall, and what we ended up doing was purchasing everything from JcPenny. Not sure if there’s one around you, but it was a great experience. Most of what they had in Big & Tall (2 groomsmen) matched what they had in regular sizes (groom & 3 other groomsmen) Also, if the sizes weren’t available in store, they were ALL available online. I’d suggest trying department stores – we really lucked out!

My groom is not plus sized, but my brother is 300 pounds and 6ft tall 🙂 He is walking me down the aisle and is going to look great in his suite- its a black suite with white vertical stipes and really looks awesome on him. There are a number of men’s wear stores out there that carry larger sizes, your hubby will be fine! 🙂 I am in a diffrent country, so I cant recommend any places, sorry.

My groom is plus sized. Although I dont have pics yet I can say when we went to look at tuxes we both really loved the black on black pinstripes for him. It was black and clean and still the stripes enlongated him.

Did you ask Men’s Wearhouse about special ordering? My husband used to play pro football so he’s a big guy! He’s 6’6″ and his shoulders are really wide so it’s often hard for him to find a great fit. But he just bought two suits at Mens Wearhouse that fit him perfectly. One they had in stock in his size and the other one they ordered for us. Since Men have to get their suits tailored anyway as long as you order something that starts off a little too big they should be able to make any suit fit really well!

Personally I hate the obvious pinstripe on a suit (it just screams 80s to me). If the stripe is slight and just a shade off of the rest of the suit then I think it would look a lot more modern and slimming. I would also avoid the pleated front with the extremely baggy legs that pool at the bottom. It makes plus-size people look stumpy (especially if they’re not that tall to begin with) The key is to find something that is streamlined but not too tight (you’ll most likely have to tailor the suit regardless of your FI’s size). I would avoid a double breasted suit, and stick to the two-button jacket – much more flattering on ANY guy. Top button does up, bottom button stays open. A proper mensware store should be able to fit him, and the bottom line when it comes to suits despite a man’s shape/size, the better quality you go, the better he’ll look. Good Luck (as if finding our dresses isn’t stressful enough!!)

Leaving the buttom botton open makes a huge difference. The bottom button wasn’t really made to be worn closed so when a bottom button is done up it pulls the jacket in a funny way which just accentuates the belly.

I’m at work so I apologize for my lack of specific replies…
We found the PERFECT suit in JC Penney but the largest size they carry is one size too small for FI. The price was amazing (like $120) and it was exactly what we’re looking for so that was a huge let down. I’m thinking about ordering it anyway just to see if a tailor can take it out a bit. I know nothing about alterations so I’m not even sure if that’s possible with a suit jacket.
Mens Warehouse had brown suits but they were like $300+. We can’t ask our groomsmen (2 of which are broke as a joke) to shell out that kind of money. I know we’re not going to get a top quality suit for how much we’re looking to spend but honestly, I don’t really care about that. I just want something that fits and that will look nice.
I checked Jos. A Bank but their Big and Tall only go to like a size 54. FI’s a 60. I’m thinking we may have to order his suit through Casual Male XL and then just try to match the color with suits from another retailer for the other guys. Seriously, the guy’s suits have caused me more stress than all of the dresses combined!

@UpstateCait: We had the same problem… we tried Macy’s & JC Penney’s, but they didn’t have pants to fit FI, either.
We actually had REALLY good luck at Men’s Wearhouse, but I went south into Holyoke, MA instead of the Wolf Rd Albany one… they suck. (sorry!)
We were in and out within 35 minutes, including tailoring. We’re picking it up Saturday, I’ll let you know how it goes. I had a coupon fro mgetting my dress at David’s so everything was half off. We got the suit, a french cuff shirt (that had to be ordered in in his size) and all the alterations for around $200.
Would it be possible to put FI in something slightly different than his guys?
I think there’s still a casual male store in Albany? There’s an outlet in Lake George that my family has always bought stuff at. We have a close family friend who was a 5x at one point.
If you PM me his sizes, I’ll ask my mom – she always knows where to find stuff 🙂

This wasn’t for a wedding, but FI rented a tux for his brother’s graduation ball from Collins Formal Wear (a tux/suit rental company, in Canada).

@thewheelsonthebus: Yes, the Wolf Rd. one does suck. We walked in and asked the guy if they had any brown suits and he goes “Yea, we do… or we don’t”. Um…?!?! We normally get most of his clothes at Casual Male since he’s a Nautica snob so I’m thinking about trying there. We work right near the one in Colonie but we normally frequent the one in the outlets since the prices are better.
After realizing how challenging this was going to be I suggested ordering him a suit with subtle pinstripes (he’s big on the pinstripes) and then having the guys order just plain brown suits to match but he’s insisting on everyone looking the same. Way to make this easy for me, dude!
I’ll PM you with his sizes.
@everyone: Thanks for all the feedback!

My FI is plus sized, but in a different way. He is “regular” sized in terms of his weight, but he is 6’9″.
His real suit we had to have made for him. Nothing came in his size or looked right on him. I guess designers, if they even come close to making something long enough, assume he has to be really large around the waist and shoulders, which he is not. He has only a 36 waist, which is perfectly normal for a really tall guy.
He did end up renting a tux from Mens Warehouse for our wedding and 2 weddings he was in. Honestly? they only looked OK, but they did make sure to fit his length.
End of the day if you want something to look really good, it needs to be custom made.

My FI is plus size. He usually wears a 3XL or 4XL T-shirt size. He’s 6’3″ 365, think huge football player.
He origionally wanted a tan linin suit, but the largest they ran was like a 52 or something. We ended up getting him a tan silk suit size 60. This way it won’t show the wrinkles like linin does, and it’s just one step heavier material but still very light for our July wedding. We ordered all the suits from Men’s Wherehouse, but had to go to a larger store and have then special order his.
No pictures yet (30 days to go).
