i ordered mine already but won't receive it until august 18th, so i dont' have a photo to show you yet.
mine is not red, even though i do agree that brides should wear red qipao, but i didn't want to pay almost $300 to wear my qipao only once (if it's red). i ordered a full-length qipao but will alter it into a short qipao after the wedding.
I haven't decide which cut (halter vs. traditional), but I know I'm going with the red, plum blossom fabric (second pic). Here are pics from when I went tried the seamstress's samples.
BTW @tingting, we're date twins! I'm also in SoCal, but O.C.

@bruintx, OMG, so rare to see a date twin for this date! did you go to UCLA (from your "BRUINtx")
Here's my qipao. I agree that red is the traditional color for brides but I don't look good in red and red isn't my wedding color anyway. I opted for a traditional look 'cuz that's the main reason I wanted to wear qiapo as my reception dress in the first place. As long as the fabric is of high quality, the qipao would look good.
@tingting: what color did you get for your qipao then? I was only *told* i should get red (by who else, but my mom), but have been considering other colors as well. i would love to see your dress once you get it!
@bruintx: oo, those dresses are so pretty! post up your final decision! I personally dont know whether I would go the halter or traditional look either, I have to try them on to be sure.
@pren79: your qipao is GORGEOUS! it looks amazing on you!! this is really swinging me to the traditional look and something non-red. I do agree with you too, the fabric is the main factor in making the qipao look good. I cant wait to start looking! : ) Thanks for sharing!
Mine is red because my FMIL got it for me. I'll take a pic in it tomorrow and upload! I think it might be the same one as the second one that bruintx posted. Beautiful qipaos ladies!
it's an ivory color with red (but not bright red) peonies all over the dress. i personally do like red (thus the red peonies), i just didn't find a red fabric that i like.
@TingTing, yup, I'm a UCLA alumna. =) Can I ask which seamstress you're using? How much does he/she charge? The one I was recommended charges $280, but I think her price has gone up since my visit and it might now be $310.
@baybejen, you can definitely go outside of the expected, red qipao! One friend wore an orange, high-collar qipao, and another wore a sky blue, halter-cut qipao.
@bruintx, i also got my BA from UCLA ;)
i think we are using the same seamstress, it's the Brocade Apparel (Ge Ge Qi Pao) in Temple City (on Las Tunas Dr.). I ordered mine about 2 weeks ago and it was $280.
i also went to the one in Rowland Heights (Vinshop), their prices are either $180 to $200 for non-silk and $280 for silk. Broacde Apparel uses only silk, thus, they are charging the same price. but Helen from Brocade Apparel is way nicer and professional, i feel that Helen will make sure i get all the necessary alterations (included in the price) i need, but not so sure about Vinshop since the guy seems less "sincere".
hope this helps!
Thanks for the info, TingTing! Yes, it was Ge Ge Qi Pao that I was planning to use. We should have gotten together and found a third bride to get Helen's 3-for-$450 deal!
These are so pretty. There are no qipaos in my wedding, but I had to comment that I love the halter cut on bruintx.
I haven't decided if I'm going to wear one or not at my wedding, but I know it'll be red for sure and halter style! :-)
I don't have pictures yet, but my qipao was red and traditionally cut(with short, cap sleeves). It was my mother's qipao when she got engaged and married, so it meant a lot to my mother and myself. I wore it for part of the reception, but switched between that and my Western style wedding gown!
I said a few weeks ago that I would post pics of my qipao and forgot! Here it is:

I really want to do something like Lisa Ling did for her wedding... But I'm worried it won't resemble a traditional Chinese cheongsam. I'm also considering wearing for the rehearsal rather than changing on the wedding day, since my colors also won't match.
Here's mine. I wore it for my rehearsal dinner and tea ceremony.
@bruintx: oh geeze! we should have!!! it'd not only save all of us a bunch of $$, but also get to meet each other! :)
@justeen: that's such a pretty dress!

For my wedding day, I will be incorporating some traditional chinese traditions, including the tea drinking ceremony and wearing the qipao (traditional chinese wedding dress). I already have my ceremony wedding dress (which I love to death) and am excited about the concept of going out to get a qipao. I was told red is the traditional color of the bride; so any ideas? If anyone has a picture of their qipaos, I would love to see them too!!
Thanks!! : D
