Ooh... good thread! I haven't made up my table names yet but I'm interested to see some. Our reception is at a local educational nature centre, so we're naming the tables after animals and using the animal footprints as the pictures. I'll be sure to post them once they are put together!
@PrairieGirl: What a fun idea! I think those are the sorts of things that get guests talking and enjoying the setting.
I'm slowly compiling the information for ours. We're having famous swing dancers of the 30s through the start of the neoswing era (including Sylvia Sykes as she's one of our favorite follows to watch/ be taught by of the modern era).
The idea is to have two frames per table. One 8x10 and one 5x7. The frames mostly came from Christmas Tree Shoppes and are primarily white, green, and black and slightly distressed. A picture of the dancer will be in the 8x10 and a short biography will be in the 5x7.
@Knubbsy-Wubbsy:oooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmg! That is fabulous idea - please email me with your recaps! I took classes from Frankie Manning and Steven Mitchell!!!!
We are doing what my grandma calls wooden heart lollypops kinda hard to describe...
But were doing names like: We tied the knot, Just Married, Kiss the bride, I Do, ECT I have a few but we sill need more 22 tables uuuggghhh
@AbbieMason: i love the famous american idea - are you picking a specific era or theme? politicians? musicians? writers?
@sfchick: We're debating if we want to have modern pictures of them if we've met/had lessons with them (Jean Veloz, Norma Miller, Frankie). We're also debating what picture to use of Sylvia, one from the 90s/80s when she was more Lindy and had hip long hair or a more recent one with Nick doing Bal? (we've had a mini lesson from her at Lindyfest when Kevin St. Laurent & Jo H. were stuck in traffic)
We went with table names as well and something that was totally *us*. We met while playing a particular online game and decided that we'd wanted to incorporate that into our wedding a bit. So our table names were the names of spaceships in the game that we play! Here's how they turned out:

Since our venue is ontop of a mountain, we decided to go with the names of local mountains (with a shot of us ontop of that mountain)

We decided to throw on a number as well as a name, so it wasn't too difficult for guests to actually locate the table in the room!
@TealaB: Thats a pretty cool idea.... Its funny cause I live near you if those are your local mountains.... :)
We're doing a vintage movie theater theme, so ours are framed copies of different old movie posters.
We are still throwing ideas around, but I'm planning to do different fish. Our wedding is "Under the sea", in blue/orange, so I wanted to find fish in blue/orange/yellow colors and use their pictures and names instead of table numbers.
We are going with Name of local pubs/bars we would have spent time with the people at that table!local
For instance the "local" where I was in University was called "the horseshow house" so that where my uni frinds will be sitting,
when I was in highschool we went to a place called the drum almost every weekend with my school friends and thats where they will be sitting!
.... the local pub in the tiny town where my mum grew up is called "the rocks of bawn" will be the name of the table where my mothers family will be sitting
etc etc! :)
We're most likely doing table numbers based on our favorite ice cream flavors. Ice cream has always been a weakness for both of us :-). We haven't yet decided on exact flavors but they will probably be based on our favorite ice cream places, such as Jeni's Ice Cream or Graeter's in Ohio!
@AbbieMason: If you want to go with history why not to the great love stories of American History? I can't think of any right now - Elvis and Priscilla? Abe and Martha? I'm sure you have a better idea than me!
We stole our idea right out of the Knot! A major theme in our wedding is showcasing our gorgeous city so we will be using El stops(Elevated train in Chicago) as our table numbers. Each table will have the graphic for that particular stop, a black and white photo of us there and a short summary of we chose that spot.
Here is the gallery at the Knot if you need more ideas.

@sfchick:we are doing historical figures and artists...after some discussion we decided it was safest to leave politicians out! :) we thought on one side we would have, say, george washington and on the opposite side a portrait painted by an american artists (gilbert stuart), hence marrying our two interests!
We named our tables after significant places in our relationship. For instance, we named a table "Spris", which was the first restaurant we had our first date, one was named "Grand Central Station" which is where DH proposed. We took photos of each place and then mounted them on card stock. Some of the photos had us in them. For instance one was named "Hammonassett", which was the beach where we had our 3rd date and took our first pic together. We used that picture. We also told the story of each place under the name. Our guests loved them and talked about them for weeks after.
We are definitely obsessed with good beers and finding local breweries, so we went with our favorite beers as the table names. Our guests loved them! I included some info about the beer and where it's brewed. Designed them on Microsoft Publisher and bought all the frames at Christmas Tree Shops.

our table names were cities that we visited together along with a picture of us in that city and a little description of what we did there. examples are below... all this stuff is DIY by the way... let me know if you want tips on how i did them!
For our Keys wedding on the beach, we used (mostly tropical) cocktails as our table names - Tequila Sunrise, Margarita, Pina Colada, etc. ...

And for the kids' table...

I'm seriously considering doing this for our tables. Such great ideas!
We're doing a Venetian masquerade theme, so our table names will likely be famous sites in Venice. We've talked about printing black and white photos of each landmark, then writing the name of the place in calligraphy on it and putting the whole thing in a beautiful, antique-looking frame.
We are having a Baltimore themed wedding and our table names are going to be different neighborhoods. My FI is using the camera I gave him for Christmas and is taking pictures of each neighborhood. We are going to find the hidden gem of each neighborhood and not just the typical icon of the neighborhood.
@emstar: I love that idea! Mr.Lite and I love trying new beers and love microbrews. His is Stone Arrogant Bastard (San Diego) and mine is Blue Point Toasted Lager (Long Island.
Iknow I want to use pictures of animal pairs doing cute things. Like these:

Though I can't think of any cute name to go along with them. Any ideas?
We are doing constellations for our wedding, since it is at a planetarium.
My cousin and his soon to be wife are using the word "love" in a whole bunch of different languages
We are getting married at a butterfly garden. So we are going to put a different butterfly with its picture and name at each table!
Us, along with a majority of our friends have all rescued dogs....soooo, because I love ALL of them....i want to have a polaroid pic of each dog as the table name.
Here's mine

We're doing names of Maine Islands. We're getting married near Camden overlooking the ocean, and I grew up spending a lot of time on an island near Boothbay
We named our tables after covered bridges in the states we have lived in. We both grew up in Maine and then went to different schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We got married on a covered bridge, so we thought it would be a cute nod to some of the elements that made our wedding unique. I took a different picture of the bridge we got married on for each table name and then labeled them with the bridge's name, location, and facts on the back for our guests to learn more about it.

FI and I have agreed since day one that we didn't want table numbers--rather we wanted to inject a little bit of US into the tables by doing table names. It has been quite the struggle to come up with a theme we agree on, but it looks like it is going to be "famous American" (corny, I know!) He is a history/politcs buff and I am an art historian, so we thought it could be fun. My concern, however, is how do we execute this?
Share your pictures of your table NAMES - I would love some inspiration :)
