both of my moms wore typical MOB/MOG dress with the jackets. They were both more comforable in them...from J.C. Penneys and Macy's I believe.
ejs...those are some HOT dresses! both our mothers would never wear anything like that though :(
All three of our Mom's keep asking me too!! I'm always like: Whatever you want! My Mom will be wearing a ballgown though, sorry I don't have pix
Wow your Mommy's look great! My Mother's having a hard time looking at dresses. She's just not sure what she'd like to wear. She's a young hot Mom but wants to dress like she's 80. And my fiance's Mom has had her dress for a year, lol. Just a simple black dress, no pics though.
I thought maybe this for my mother (pic attached).. She is a heavier build doesn't want anything that will make her feel that way or warm.. lol. she is always hot! and then FI's mom is the same size as me.. small - and I am a little frightened with what she might come up with. . . something dramatic..
EJS your Moms looked HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats what I want for my Moms!!!!!
@Redeened Rebekah - That is a gorgeous dress and I love the neckline. That is kind of what i picture my mom in. Where did you find that picture?
My mom's dress was from a Macy's flagship and his mom's dress was a Jasmine Couture MOB dress or something. She tried for months to find something affordable and finally said screw it, lol.
@redeemedrebekkah, is that from Nordstroms? They had something JUST like that up a couple weeks ago!!!!
Great thread. I feel like my mom also picks things that make her look older and frumpy but she hates her arms and refuses to wear anything above elbow length (not just for the wedding this is a daily rule). This pretty much means she'll get the typical dress and jacket combo which is fine but I want to help her find a cute version that comes in navy.
I am sorry but I don't remember where the photo came from.. I think I was just looking through google images.
I like that one too but my mom thinks she will be too warm, then proceeded to tell me that she wanted to wear a sleeve-less top underneath so that she can take off the top in the pic for the reception. . . Maybe there are nice ones that could go under but I kind of cringed inside. lol. (picturing one that she already owns that is not nice enough for a wedding)
My mom had no interest in wearing a traditional MOB dress, I told her that was fine but I did not want her wearing what she wore to my brother's wedding - a short dress, black with tiny white polka dots, strapless with a very poofy skirt. He got married in Vegas, so fine, but mine is slightly more traditional. So then she went around telling everyone I "made" her wear a certain dress. LOL! She ended up getting a simple dress at Banana Republic. She wanted to shorten it but luckily we talked her out of it - it is already knee length! She is only mid-50s and very attractive but sometimes she dresses too young. :)
FI's mom wearing a traditional mother's dress, she is mid-70s and never wears dresses. Both will look awesome, as will my stepmom. All different colors - tan, brown, and eggplant.
I dread this shopping trip with both my mom and my FMIL! I get the feeling they're both going to get something really just wrong for them... especially FMIL! She has a tendency to dress kinda matronly.
When i went dress shopping with my mom, she bee-lined towards the prom section. I let her try on a few (just for kicks) in ombre, irredescent, glitter, etc, and she liked them all! Oye vez. I finally said NO and dragged her to the adult section for dressy dresses and this is what we got
For anyone NOT wanting matronly/typical dresses if you have an "almost too trendy" mom like mine (i'm getting a mental image of a white and blue ombre satin dress she tried on and i'm cringing), try Nordstrom. They have classy options.
Also, since when do boleros have to be white ONLY?! Maybe your moms can get a "jacket" made off Etsy that covers them up but isn't big and bulky or attached to the dress, if that isn't their style?
I'm all for women in their 50's dressing nice, but I cry inside imagining a rehash of my high school prom
My mom does not want a "traditional" matronly MOB dress. She's 59, but looks amazing for her age and works damn hard. She's tried on a bajillion dresses (probably more than me actually) and found 2 serious contenders. The first dress is a WToo bridesmaid gown. The 2nd dress is Calvin Klein from Nordstrom. She'll probably end up with the WToo dress.
My mom wore a pink dress (that she got at Saks Fifth Avenue) and my mother-in-law wore a champagne dress (which I believe she got online).
So the mothers and I went shopping this past weekend. . (My grandma, FMIL, & my mom). Everyone bought something!!! Great! But now my mom is having second thoughts and doesn't like the one she picked... so we are back to the drawing board... I would still love to see your pics of real moms :)
here is my Mama at my sister's wedding in September. There is ruching around the waist that was super slimming on her but you couldn't tell because she didn't take the coat off. I went with her and we had mapped out a day of stores to hit - first store was Macy's and much to our surprise we found this dress and it was clearanced for $28!!!!! Plus, the only pair of shoes we found to match were also clearanced for $11!!! My mom was thrilled! (Forgive her squinty face)
I told my mom she could wear whatever she wanted also - she said her only rule was she would NOT wear the "typical" (if there is such a thing) MOB dress with sparkles, sequins, etc. I said that was my only rule too!
She puchased this top from the Peurvian Connection, it's really pretty, and will wear it with a natural colored long skirt. In case the pic doesn't come up - it's a crochet type material, in green. It's very elegant in real life.
That's the plan right now - we have 9 months before the wedding and my dad is sure mom will go shopping again and find another dress she likes before the wedding! ;-)
Oh, this is terrible, but I wish I could post what I saw a MOG wear to a wedding this weekend! It was a tiny purple, one shoulder, mini-dress! Would have looked cute if she were 20. At least she did have a good figure. The really great part was the blond mullet she was sporting. Gotta love small town Tennessee!

Both my mom and FI's mom keep asking what they should wear... I have no idea! Lets have a pic sharing of the mothers outfits. :)
