I read in the paper today that Signet just bought Zales corp. for $900million. So, it looks like Zales will now be under the same umbrella as Kay’s and Jared’s. Also, that thing where all Zales were supposed to close in ’09, only a few of them did.

@Schrodingers-Car: eh, it was all produced in the same factory to begin with. Zales, Kay, Helzberg all have overlapping inventory.

I don’t know why people have a problem with local jewelers. The prices are good and craftsmanship is way better. I would never buy jewelery from an “out of the box” store. An ex bought me a diamond necklace from Kay once and the chain kept breaking and eventually I had to give up on wearing it because they didn’t want to repair it.

@Monicaab: I dont know about anyond else, but for me ‘out of the box’ jewelers are more convenient. My husband is military, so we move a lot. So buying something local means that if it ever needs repair I have to pay to take it somewhere else and hunt for a jeweler. Whereas with a mall store, there is almost guaranteed to be one where ever we go. I agree that kays is awful though. Their customer service is hard to deal with and their repair shops do a crummy job. I had heard good things about Zales though. But I guess they will probably get pretty crummy now too.
