They probably checked her and she probably wasn’t dilated much, so just false labor.  The contractions are important, but even more so is the cervix effacing and dilating.  As long as that cervix is still closed nicely, baby will not come out.  Also, if her water hasn’t broken or anything, then it’s safe to keep baby in there longer.

I used to work at a hospital and we had ladies come in like this all the time.  The hospital wouldn’t have sent her home if she was truly in labor and if they thought she would deliver soon.

I had contractions 3 minutes apart  for 3 hours straight at 36 weeks. We went to the hospital but they were not strong enough contractions to cause me to dilate and go into full labor.  So I was sent home.  That was 2 weeks ago. False labor is when your body is actually contracting but they aren’t effective enough contractions to actually make your baby come out.  That can stop and start lots of times before true labor starts.  If she isn’t dilating, she won’t have the baby, and the contractions will stop.  Or they will end up turning into real labor later and she will go back.

@bailey12:  Google “Braxton Hicks”.

They can go either way.  They may stop and then start again a few days (weeks) later.  Or stop and then not start again until true labor.  Or eventually progress to being strong enough to dilate and begin true labor.  They are technically braxton hicks (because they don’t dilate you) but most sources say Braxton Hicks aren’t regular and timable. False labor is like Braxton Hicks that become regular for a little while.
