If you found colorful vases, you could set a couple of 2″ potted plants in them and add bud vases with single flowers like this

You can get the vases at thrift shops and paint them the color you need.

One flower per centerpiece- the same as your inspiration pic

 

Stones, water, and one single flower with a ribbon.  - I really like this idea. It is simple, classy, and not overpowering.  Maybe just a simple black ribbon or even lace if you do something vintage inspired.
