I recently changed my name with the SSA. I kept my entire birth name and just added DH’s last name to the end (no hyphen or anything, I just have two middle names now). Do I have to change my license immediately, or can I wait until I need to renew it?

@AnonymousCupcake: I think it’s best to change it immediately – at least this is what I did. That being said, they never punched a hole in my old license, so I have 2 functioning licenses with 2 names! 😛 At least that’s what happened here in CA…

@AnonymousCupcake: I would go ahead and change it as soon as I could. In my state you’re allowed one free name/address change per license. It still expires on the same date though. So if your license was good from 1.1.2012 thru 1.1.2020 and you got married in 5.5.2015 you could get a replacemebt license for free good thru the original 1.1.2020

You should probably change it sooner than later (it took me about a month after changing w/ SS) just because any discrepancies will be easier to deal with if all of your IDs have the same name. Especially since you won’t be carrying around your SS card with you everywhere! Plus, it’s really nice to see your new name in your wallet on an official ID, I definitely felt like it was MUCH more real getting my new license than any point before that.
