so I'm looking at this website with all of these pretty garters and there's a section for "Prom Garters" which look like theyre for teeny boppers. Why is this the first I'm hearing about it? WTF!!?!?
HAHAHAHA why.... I thought when girls wore huge white ball gowns to prom it was a little weddingish. This is really pushing it, or am I just missing something? I'm glad I skipped prom.
I just asked my friend and she said a few girls at her prom 5 years ago did. Weiiird
Teenagers these days are just incredibly weird. The world is doomed....
I know a lot of people wore them about 10 years before my prom. I remember as a kids seeing my younger aunt and uncle having theirs (or their dates) in their cars hanging form the mirrors. They are now in their late thirties/early forties.
My friends and I all wore garters to both of our proms 7-8 years ago. It's just what everybody did. I'm shocked to know other people have never heard of it. Haha. We gave them to our dates (no they did NOT take them off themselves!) and they would usually put them on their rearview mirrors. I don't know, seems a little weird saying it now but like I said it's just what people DID and I never thought to question it. :)
10 years ago at my prom, garters were pretty popular. You actually got one free if you bought your dress from a certain place.
That was the norm for my high school. Actually I never word it, just gave it to the guy and they wear it around their arm haha
edit: to give you a timeline. I graduated in '03
Probably when they started wearing short, tight, hooker dresses to prom. Everythign is so sexualized that kids aren't given a chance to be kids these days. :(
WHAT? Lol that is too weird. I agree about the big fluffy ball gowns being too wedding-ish to wear to prom. But Garters? Thats just pushing it!
Totally the norm around here, although I skipped this particular tradition when it was time for my prom because I thought it was gross. And I remember my mom asking if I was sure, because she remembered from back in her day that it's like a tradition for the boy to hang the garter from his rear view mirror after. Ew. Yes, mom, I'm sure. I didn't wear one for my wedding either, actually. But yes, at my old high school's prom they will actually announce a special song for the garter removal, and it's pretty much what you see at a wedding but times like 300. Ew.
@OctBride-2012: The garter thing actually doesn't really work with the short tight dresses, at my old high school the girls all wear ballgowns. And I don't know if I'd say 18 (the age students usually go to prom) a kid, but yeah I don't want to see all their dates up their dresses, it's just gross.
I think its regional. Nobody at my prom (in NJ) did this or had even heard of it. My prom was in '08.
I wore one to my prom in '07. I wouldn't say that everyone did at my HS, but it was definitly "a thing"
I think it goes in and out. When my brother was in hs in the 90s it was a big thing to have garters at prom. All the guys would hang them from their mirror after prom. When I was in high school (early 2000s) it was not a thing anymore. I guess it is back.
We all wore them to my prom in 2004, it was just normal I guess. We also still wore big ball gowns though, none of these short, tighet dresses.
Never heard of it. I went to both junior and senior proms and didn't know anyone wore them, nor knew of anyone who had one around their rearview mirror who wasn't married.
That's so weird I've never heard of it. My prom was 10-11 years ago. But still...never heard of it from my mom or anyone else. Most people wore nice formal dresses at mine, none were the short tight ones. Mine wasn't a ballgown I guess, but a long A-line with a little pouf under it
Can someone tell me what is the point....?
Of course they don't really have a point at weddings anymore (besides straight up tradition), but at least I can see where the tradition came from with those...
im suprised no one else has heard of this either. Girls have always worn garters to prom, as far back as I can remember lol. My friends and I all wore garters to prom as well (8-9 years ago) I never thought to question it either.... everyone just did it lol it was a tradition to give the garter to your date haha
It's been 10 years since my prom and everyone wore them then. I remember my friends mom made them for us and we all took a garter picture. And I know we weren't the only ones. Though I still don't get the purpose of a garter and will not be wearing one to my wedding.
I've never heard of that, but then we didn't have 'prom'. We had 'grad' so the traditions could very well be a bit different.
I graduated in 2009 and as far as I knew, some of the girls were doing this. I didn't go to prom, but I had heard of a few girls (namely the popular girls in that group) doing it.
I graduated in 07 and as far as I know, none of the girls wore them. Seems weird to me.
I went to prom in 03, 04 and 05, and everyone had garters. Nobody really wore them, save for pictures, but then the guys could wear them around their arm all night and hang them on their rearview mirror for the rest of the school year. There was no creepy mass removal and this was before short, skimpy gowns. We just had fun picking out fancy ones to give as kerpsakes. I actually think my husband still has mine in a box somewhere, haha. I totally thought this was the norm, I'm surprised to see that some areas have never heard of it!
I went to Prom in 06/07 and we had garters. Everyone had garters, girls gave guys their garter and the guy bought the girl a corsage. The guy normally wore the garter around his arm during the dance and the girl wore the corsage around the wrist.
I'm actually okay with the idea of ball gowns THAT AREN'T WHITE/IVORY/CHAMPAGNE being worn to prom, but the idea of garter removal/giving to the guy to hang on the rearview mirror ... that just screams sexual to me and that's just ... come on people it's PROM
Neeever heard of that. Way too sexual for teenagers.
Btw I graduated in 08
I graduated in 2001, and whiel we don't have prom persay, we do have a formal dance after our ceremony. One of my friend's mom made us all garters that matched our dresses, and we wore them and took pictures, but there was no garter removal or tradition surrounding it.
I pretty much just used mine to strap my camera and a water bottle to my leg. This was the era of big ball gowns so there was plenty of storage under there if you're classy like me... haha.
I never heard of it until a local dress shop started posting peoples prom dresses and they showed up on my facebook wall. I had a "wtf" moment, too.
Uh that is totally norm and I have been out of high school for 20 years and we did that way back then already
I think it might be a little unfair to automatically assume it was something sexual. Like PPs have said, in our school there was no "mass removal" or removal by anyone but ourselves for that matter. It was more of a keepsake kind of thing.
Also, we didn't wear short/skanky dresses as some have assumed either.
I think it's just a difference in your region.
@arsing89: I'm '07 too and EVERYONE had them. Maybe it is a regional thing.
We all wore floor length dresses and some of the girls would slide their garters down to right above their ankle and then let their dates take them off. I just shot mine like a rubber band at my date. heheh hit him in the face.
We wore them to our prom. I graduated in '04.
I graduated in 1991 and nobody wore garters to prom.
What's the point of a garter at prom anyway??
@Puppy Love: But the actual object is sexual, isn't it? I can keep a vibrator as a "keepsake" instead of using it for its intended purpose and say that it's not sexual. Maybe that's a stretch? Hahahaha
Definitely not the norm in my area haha, I've never heard of it!
Everyone wore one at our prom in 2001. You gave it to the boy at the end of the night for his rearview mirror. He gave you his bowtie for yours. Definitely not sexual, it's just some stretchy fabric. I totally wore mine below my knee. HA! And we all wore floor length gowns so no one ever saw them.
My sisters went to proms in the early to mid 90s and they both wore garters each time. And my mother, back in the late 60s also did. It's super, super common.
