My sister has had difficulty getting hired as a teacher due to having a masters degree (and the schools being required to pay a little more as a result)… so for the past couple years she’s been working as a teacher’s aid. She finally got her first “real” job as a kindergarden/ESL teacher and starts today. My BIL just sent me a text that he wants to give her a gift to mark the start of her new job but doesn’t know what to get her… any ideas?

A Vera Bradley bag to carry books/work back and forth to school!

I send the bag idea! My dad gave me a big Ralph Lauren canvas bag to carry all my books/papers when I started teaching and it’s amazing.

And an assortment of her favorite sweet things (chocolate, candies) to keep in her desk… that desk drawer was a life-saver (ugh, the pun) for us!

I am a teacher and I would suggest either, a nice work bag (I have a vera bradley that can hold my laptop and I absolutely LOVE it), I am not sure where you live but a giftcard to a teachers store nearby is wonderful, one thing I would have LOVED my first year is a door sign or something to hang in her classroom that say Mrs (or Miss) __________’s Classroom.
Also a very throughtful gift I got from a close friend was chicken noodle soup for the teacher soul.
Congrats to your sister!!! (for those of you who aren’t aware teaching jobs are VERY hard to come by today so it is a MAJOR accomplishment)

All great ideas… thanks so much! I will forward them to my sister’s hubby!
@MarieeToBee: Yes, she has worked so hard to get this job… I can’t tell you how many jobs she’s applied to over the last couple years. It was a long time coming.

I love the tote bag idea- teachers are forever carrying things to & from work (laptops, papers to grade, lesson plan books, what have you). This could be an amazing lifesaver!
I also know at the beginning of the school year, my sister (who teaches K) always spends a small fortune at target. So, if you don’t want to choose the bag she’ll carry, maybe a gift card? It would definitely get used ASAP!

I think a Vera or monogrammed initial tote bag would be great for papers etc, many of my friends that teach use them daily. Also maybe a coffee card to a place close to her so she can get caffinated in the morning
