if they fit the envelope already.. dont worry about it... no point in going through all the agony of redesigning. :)
I wouldn't worry about the difference of width. I am making my invites too and although I bought the envelopes before designing the invite, in the end there was still a little extra room (in the width) to make the invites look proportional.
I'm not too far into the design process.. the main hasstle is figuring out the size of paper to order and planning how many invites I can fit on a page to minimized wasted paper...
I don't think it's a huge deal. But personally, I'm fussy enough that it would bug me a tiny bit if there was extra room on the sides of the invitation. I think about 1/8" on each side is enough room to make sure it will fit without extra room to jiggle. For more info, take a peek at this standard card/paper size guide from Paper Source:
but also, how think are your invites.. because you need to make room for that a little...
say if your making pocketfolds, or putting rsvp cards, map accomodation cards so the extra width could be good!
@ccrantetobe - thanks, I didn't think of that. There will be one piece of really thick cardstock and 3 other pieces of lighter cardstock, all the same full size stacked together... an inch extra in the width is still probably a bit excessive but now I'm thinking it's not SO bad!!
like what ccranetobe said, you gotta consider the thickness of the end product. I'm doing a square invite 5.75" and I had designed my invites at 5.5" thinking it'd be good enough. It comes with a pocket fold as well as a 2 page invite. I made a mock and tried fitting it in the envelope. No go. I have to rethink my design now cuz of it.
I am going through this heartache right now. I designed all the inserts for the pocketfolds based on the "available space" given by paperandmore.com's specs. Yes I can squeeze a slip of paper in there that is that exact size, but not 4 inserts that are 130lb cardstock. I'm just glad I didn't print everything before discovering that!

Hi guys,
I'm designing my own invites and went into a paper store tonight to ask some questions about ordering envelopes... anyways the girl said to make sure that the size of my invitations is really close to the size of the envelope, so it doesn't jiggle around too much because it's not as nice. I had thought that as long as the envelope is bigger than the invite it's not a problem. The length of the envelope will be just about perfect, but the width will be about 1 inch extra room in the envelope than the size of the invite. Should i redesign my invites to fit the envelope, or not worry about it?
