My mom got my husband, brothers and myself a gift card to Snowshoe Mountain in WV for xmas! I started snowboarding probably 3 years ago and i can at least make it down the mountain without making a fool of myself haha - prior to that  though I had never done either. We live about 2 hours from the NC mountains so I really only get up there a couple times a year so i'm still learning.

My husband grew up in MA and VT so he was really good at skiing but made the switch to snowboarding when we started going together.

So hive, do you snowboard or ski?

I can do both but I look like a scarecrow caught in a tornado when I am skiing, on the other hand, I am decent on a board.  So much more similar to the skateboarding I did as a kid.

I am currently learning to snowboard.  I was waffling between the two, but I have lousy joints (knees and ankles) and what I like about the snowboard is that you're so locked in place.  I feel like my knee could give out easily with the skis since they're going in two directions.  And your ankles are pretty much immobile in the crazy snowboard boots.

That said, I can still barely go a few feet on the snowboard, but I've only been once.

I use to know how to ski. A few years ago DH taught me to snowboard on a sledding hill in our town. I was awesome so we decided to go an actual ski resort. I could not make it down the bunny hill and kept running into the rope that pulls people back up. Needless to say we never went again:)

I have an apalling sense of balance, so I know snowboarding is probably out for me but I would LOVE to learn how to ski at some point!

I used to ski, and did it for over 10 years. Tried snowboarding a couple times.

I miss skiing so much! Haven't done it in over 6 years now :(

I've been skiing all of my life and LOVE IT. I've been snowboarding for a few years, but just can't get the hang of it. I took FI out for his first time last year and it was HI-larious to watch a grown man fall so many times. Can't wait to go again this winter!

I snowboard...well, I snowboard poorly right now! (just started!) It is a blast though, and I am really enjoying getting used to it!  I'd like to try skiing eventually, but my DH and all his friends board...so that's why I got into it.

I am terrible at snowboarding!  I am not that great at skiing either.  I just hate getting hurt.  I need lessons I guess...

I've been a skier since I was pretty little.  My whole family skis (and my brother even works at a ski resort in Utah).  I love it!

I've never been snowboarding. Only been skiing a few times, I can just "snowplow" on the bunny slopes.

I grew up  on skis and then tried snowboarding in my early teens... I have been snowboarding for about 8 years and love it .. but I sometimes go back to skiing just to switch it up .

I pretty much hate both but I'm "better" at skiing.  Better is definitely a relative term, though.

I'm doing neither this year because I broke my ankle recently playing hockey (skating, I'm good at....well I was anyway).  Hooray for the perfect excuse!

I've never done either. I don't like being cold, this is why I live in Arizona LOL snow is really pretty and all, as long as I'm inside with a heater.

I'm a good skiier but I blow at snowboarding.  I hate having my feet strapped in and my knee twisted awkwardly.  I also don't care for the amount of being on my ass that snowboarding requires (for me).  I'd rather stick with something I'm comfortable with and good at.

My fiance and I ski.  We try to go skiing a couple times each season.  I would try to snowboard, but I don't want to give up any of my ski day to spend learning to snowboard.  :)

@SunnySquirrel: I'm the same way!  A part of me would love to learn to snowboard but I don't want to give up a day of skiing blues and blacks to spend the day on my butt on the greens trying to learn snowboarding.

@Mrs.KMM: I never learned how to Ski - but i cerntainly spent the day on my butt learning how to snowboard. i would fall and just could.not.get.up for the life of me - i'd end up just sitting until i had enough energy to try again... i almost gave up honestly. i was so defeated i'm surprised i ever tried again.

I've never tried either. FI and I are both indoor people, and I don't like the cold or the snow haha. But I feel like I am the only person my age that I know who hasn't been skiing or snowboarding.

I learned how to ski first but I love boarding so much more. It's similar to surfing so I like getting double practice when I do either sport. I haven't been in a few years and miss it so much!

I used to go skiing as a kid but I never really enjoyed it.  The hassel was not worth the  actual "enjoyment" of going down the mountain.  DH LOVES snowboarding but I've resisted trying it because I just don't like the hassel, (the clothes, the snow, the discomfort).  But I'm trying it for the first time this weekend.  sigh.  here's hoping I come back with all my bones intact.

I've been skiing since I was 4 and raced gs and slalom in college.  Luckily I work close to a a few good mountains so I try to get out on friday nights.  I can also snowboard, but I just have a lot more experience/confidence on skis. My Fi had never been.  I tried taking him last winter and it was a disaster!!! lol

Learned to ski in Alaska at age 9 (ok, technically skied a few times at age 8 in Michigan, but they were hills in retrospect) and raced for several years there and then in New Hampshire.  I did try out snowboarding twice and had fun (and would do so again), but my first love remains downhill skiing.

Can you add, I've tried both but prefer not to engage in either?

I just am not a fan of any winter sport that involves me being outdoors. I hate the cold and that is a huge problem half the year because I live in Michigan...Burrr, I'm already ready for the melt down.

I find snowboarding to be way easier, especially for a beginner. I was actually raised at a ski resort and I can't ski to save my life even after taking countless lessons. Snowboarding I was able to pick up in literally 15 minutes. I can't do any wild moves like you see in competitions but I'm not aiming for that.

I've only snowboarded (aside from once when I traded with a friend for her skis, bad idea). I've done it since I was a kid and love it.

We are big backcountry skiers.  The first time we ever met was on top a mountain while backcountry skiing.  He also proposed to me on top a mountain while backcountry skiing!  (Backcountry means no lifts or resorts, but you need to know avalanche safety and have a good pair of lung/legs!)

I never learned to ski as a kid.  Had to wait until I had money and started at the age of 29, just 6 years ago!

So far in just Nov/Dec 2011, I've skied 5 times and FI has been out 12 times already.

    Yep, we liked to ski.

I'm not like most people.  I started out skiing as a kid, took lessons for a couple years actually but could never get the hang of it.  Then I tried snowboarding once and just picked it up right away so now its all I do!

Going snowboarding for the first time on our one year anniversary. DH and I both love the snow and the cold so we're excited as hell. I used to figure skate but for some reason I've always felt I would be terrible on skis; I'm hoping I'll be decent at boarding though.

    @totheislnds:

    What about the option

Both - and I kick ass at both?

Anyway, I do both I don't really have a preference.  It really depends where I ski.  In VT and eastern Canada I alwasy snowboard since the lifts are convenient and there are no flat places where I'd need to walk a long time.

In the alps i ski becasue they are littered with T-bar and plate lifts, which I find downright painful on a snowboard, gondolas, so you have to take everything off constantly, and a hell of a lot of flat land to traverse.  They are not very snowboard friendly :(

    @hotchildinthecity:

I actually think snowboarding is far worse for the knees.

Both my SO and myself Ski...although he used to be a snow boarder as well.

Both him and I have real jobs and than side jobs. His side job is doing Ski Patrol at a local Mtn, which earns us free season passes there and free tickets for when our family or friends wants to join us for a day, although its mainly volunteer and he gets paid with gift cards tot the mtns ski shop....stilll a pretty good deal.

So we go skiing quite a bit, and my side job is also a weekend job of working at retail store so I dun mind him working on the weekends since I usually do anyways, plus my hrs die down in the winter and i get more days off to enjoy skiing, The other patrollers are nice and dun mind me hanging out at patrol top with them when I get cold or tired. :-)

I used to live in Colorado as a kid so I have some decent memories of going as a kid...Although the last time I went as a child my sister skied herself into a fence and broke her arm...

However a few years ago I went for the first time in over ten years, and it was so painful! I couldn't keep my skis straight and kept falling, meanwhile these little 5 years were flying right by me. I took a class on the green and that was ok....the only problem was that the only way back down was on a red slope.

I think staying in with a hot chocolate, a fireplace, and a book is more my speed...

    Ski!

DH and I love it. He's been doing it for years and I was a late bloomer. He taught me well though.

He actually proposed to me on the way up the mountain to Snow Shoe, when we stopped at an overlook :)

And in a few weeks we're headed to Vail for our honeymoon! So excited!!!

I just went snowboarding for the first time yesterday. OMG I have bruises all over for falling down so much! I want it to snow where I live so I can practice in the back yard!!!!

Eeeek, I hope it gets easier.
