I was just talking about this at work today. It’s a very sad fact that most Americans do not know about. Also a lot of the prostitutes in our country are under age and most are slaves.
@SleepingWithNuns: I have some patients that are adults now and were victims of this as a child. It's horrible...awful...absolutely evil. So sad. Thank you for speaking for them and spreading the word. I don't have the courage to speak out for them like you. =(
:(
I read a report on this in school (psyc) and it is really heartbreaking and sad. Also, people denying it doesn't help at all. I'm glad you are doing what you are.
It is so sad. There was a town very close to where I went to college that had a very high rate of it. There was a lot at our school educating about it and trying to take action against it. But still so sad.
Thank you both so very much. You are too kind. I do what I can. I have such a heart for those who have no voice, and have been trying to speak out for them as much as possible. I'm trying to get my homeless girl poem published in the next few months to spread the word.
@SleepingWithNuns: Best of luck in your publishing. I applaud you for your voice!
I met an wonderful albeit broken woman who was a victim of this. It took her 12 years to get free. What she endured gave me nightmares for weeks. I wish that movies were shown of this in every high school classroom. Only by raising awareness among the younger generation will this ever stop. Thank you for being a voice to the voiceless.
@secondchances: I couldn't imagine living 12 years in that kind of environment
@SleepingWithNuns: She is a very strong woman to have survived and even stronger to now speak out. What she endured is horrific and I don't think she will ever completely heal from the psychological aspect of it. I watched her jump in fear from a man just brushing past her. She was sold around the world before ending up here. They had her strung out on drugs for years yet she got herself clean in order to be clear headed enough to escape. Now that is strength! Not many girls survive that long. I think the average life expectancy for a slave is a third of that. So sad!
@secondchances: Yeah, I was thinking when you first mentioned her the possibility that someone could live twelve years and not either die or get maimed and discarded is astounding. What a brave, strong woman!
I actually first found about about this from Law and Order SVU. Not sure what that says about me, but I was astonished and looked up more information. I'm suprised that so many people don't know about it, or choose to believe it is not a problem.
I donate money when I can, but I wish I could/would do more.

A while back one of the girls I work with began telling me of her great heartache for children that have become victims of sex trafficking. Her church was very passionate about the subject, and had worked with the mayor to sign a bill making our city a slave-free city.
I mentioned this subject to someone I was friends with at the time, and she became extremely deffensive, becoming offended at the possibilty that slavery still existed in a country where it had become abolished. Well, the truth is, just because something is illegal doesn't mean people are not doing it.
I'm a poet, and my coworker begged me to write a story about the victims of human sexual traffcking. I agreed, she spoke to her pastor, and now they want me to read it in front of the congretation. It's been more than a few months but I'm starting to finally get the image in my mind of how I want to write this poem.
Today I was researching human trafficking, and my heart was breaking.
Some interesting facts:
- 300,000 children each year in America are sold or kidnapped into sex slavery
- 2 children evern second are taken worldwide
- In places like Cambodia the average age for young girls is 15, however girls as young as 4 are made to perform oral sex.
Also, this is a link to a map, and you can see reports from around the world of these things:

If no one says anything, and the word isn't spread, how will we ever escape this horrible reality? I know this is a tough topic, but I feel it needed to be said.
