My FI and are doing the same thing - a small(ish) 65-person wedding, June 24, 2012!
We've had very good luck looking at restaurants - most places can fit about 50 people, and are very accomodating for private parties. Of the places we looked at, most had a minimum "Buy-Out" between $1500 and $6000; this price is a credit for food and beverages that you have to meet to have the restaurant close for your event. With a buy-out for 50 people, you can have a really nice reception and bar and not spend any more than the minimum.
Some of the places we liked:
- Jolie in Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill
- Rebar in DUMBO (maybe on the higher end of your price range, especially for evening events)
- Anima Bistro in Williamsburg
- iCi in Fort Greene
- Abigail Wine Bar near the Brooklyn Museum
- Juliette in Williamsburg (this is where we're getting married!)
- Frankie's 457 in Cobble Hill
- Robin des Bois in Boerum Hil
- Emporio in SoHo (not Brooklyn, but a beautiful restaurant)
Good luck!
Thanks so much! We are checking out iCi and Frankies. Rebar is TOTALLY booked until November, even for small parties. I love Julliette, what a great idea! Congrats!!!
The manager at ICI was been wonderful she was so flexiable and offered lots of options.
That's great! How many people are you having at iCi? Are you doing dinner or lunch? We need to make our venue decision this weekend and iCi is a major contender. I am having about 40 and it still seemed somewhat small. Are you using the back garden also?
@AJoy77:
Thanks!
iCi is a great place! The food is amazing (next time you go, go for brunch and have the poached eggs and truffled grits.... MMMMM). I loved the back garden, it would be perfect for a small summer ceremony and cocktail hour.
Good luck on your search! Let us know what you choose!
@AJoy77: We aren't using Ici only because we are still in the process of finalizing our details yet but I've visited the space and communicated with the manager serveral times via email. She's really responsive and worked with us on a variety of diffrenet options/budgets. If I was having a 50 or less people Ici would absolutely be a contender! However right now we are looking at double that amount of people (or more) so we have to consider larger venues.
I agree the upstairs space looks a tad small for a cermony but with honestly with 20-25 ppl on each side, i think it would be fine. Plus I'd would love see pops of color against the white background and I'd have the cocktails/dinner downstairs or in the garden.
Let me know via PM how it turns out for you.
Check MyMoon in Williamsburg. We had a 110-ish person wedding on a budget and it was fabulous!! The place can only hold 140ppl tops, so 50ppl would be great in that space. Their space outside for the ceremony is FABULOUS. I can post a few pics if you want.
Don't know if this helps and good luck!
@moosejaw: Thanks! We are actually considering having the wedding in the DC area now, near my parents. We're really attracted to the outdoor venues, and it's been hard to find what we are looking for on a budget in NY!
@moosejaw: please post. I watned to visit that space as well
Mines is a 5k budget for 80 ppl. Our venue is the aurora gallery check it out. They have the pipe and draping and uplights already installed.
Hey ladies, so yesterday I went for a site check at the Akwaaba Mansion, a B&B thats located in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn.
I really loved the venue for its style and charm. Currently, I have a fairly large list and although they say they can accomdate 125 max, for my needs I think it may be a tad small. However if we decide to do a more intimate wedding, this is defintely a front runner. You can bring in any cater and would have to rent chairs (if you don't want to use their white ones). I took a few pix that I'll post later. When I checked with them back in January these were the rates.
RATES FOR INSIDE EVENTS MON. - FRI. AND SUN. ARE $250 AN HOUR; RATES FOR SAT. EVENTS ARE $300 AN HOUR. AN ADDITIONAL $400 FEE IS CHARGED FOR THE ADDED USE OF THE OUTSIDE COURTYARD AND GARDEN FOR A FOUR-HOUR PERIOD
You would also have to rent the four guest rooms for a night (which include breakfast). To me its fairly reasonable considering NYC outrageous prices, plus you get a unique venue where you can have alot of control.
Just an FYI.

Hello! I've been engaged almost a month and we stil cannot decide on a venue. We are having a small <50 person wedding and are def on a budget. We are leaning towards a raw loft/gallery space in Brooklyn but I'm worried that with having to bring everything in ourselves, it will really push the price up. Trying to do everything for around $8k. Anyone have any experience with small Brooklyn weddings or gallery spaces. We're going to be looking at some venues this week and would love to have any insight.
TIA!
