I wouldn’t purchase anything until you have a date and venue. So much depends on that. Look online, Pinterest, whatever, to get ideas, but don’t buy until you have some basic stuff booked.

@angel2014:  it definitely does depend on venue. I had one idea in mind before we were engaged, then we picked a venue and every single thing changed. Maybe instead of buying things, spend time making budgets, picking attire, making a guest list, creating address labels for guest list, and buy some stamps (recently just discovered you can’t send anything without them haha).

Oh yeah, I definitely would hold off on spending any money before all the details are finalized! You might think that certain things are DEFINITELY going to be useful (say, votive candles) and then end up with a venue that either provides them free of charge, doesn’t allow them at all, or has a completely different look and feel than you were imagining.

I’d settle with a wedding binder (I got a pretty Martha Stewart Avery one from Staples), the Bridal Bargains book and a Martha Stewart Weddings subscription. 🙂

I would hold off!  One of my friends bought a bunch of small things ahead of time to “save money”, turns out once they were actually planning everything changed and she threw most of it out!

I agree with a PP, don’t buy things yet, but start to do your research!

I would definitely hold off until you have a basic idea of venue, season, formality level, guest list size, etc. If you start buying before you have firm plans about how things will work, it’s easy to spend money on stuff you never actually use.

Hmm some things I bought relatively early that don’t really depend on your venue etc: card box, cake topper, toasting flutes, cake cutter… I also bought my shoes before my dress but I know many people wouldn’t.

My wedding is still a year away, but I already bought our ring dish (I knew that I wouldn’t want to use a ring pillow). Also, since we’ve already booked our venue, I’m about to buy our wood table numbers already. Just like what everyone said, I’m trying not to buy other things since my “vision” of the wedding might change, haha. Hope this helps 🙂
