We are doing a VERY small (only 12 people) at our destination wedding and I am happy with my decision. The resort we are having the ceremony at is very helpful in helping plan without me having to go there a few times first (we are getting married at the Ritz). I’m not sure how much more cost effective it is as far as local vs. destination, but I guess it will depend on how elaborate you want your ceremony, reception and decor to be. I am doing a lot of my decorations, invites, gifts, etc. myself, so I’m able to keep a small budget and personalize what I want. Make a list of what is important to you (dress, food, location, decor, etc) and factor in how much you will have left over to spend on everything else. Good luck!

Of the 50 people on your guest list, how many do you REALLY want to come? If the answer is that these are your 50 most important people and you would be super sad for even a few to miss it, you shouldn’t do a Destination Wedding. But if you are cool with quite a few of those invitees not coming, why not go for it?

We had a similar situation. We knew we wanted a small wedding from the outset, and a Destination Wedding crossed our minds. However it was very important to Mr. LK that his uncle, who is very ill, attended our wedding. Due to his medical status, there is no way Mr. LK’s uncle would ever be able to travel far (and far outside of his comfort zone). So we had to choose a location within a short driving distance that would accomodate the needs of Mr. LK’s uncle. We ended up choosing somewhere that is 1-2 hours away for the vast majority of our guests. It’s far enough away that it feels like a mini-DW, but close enough to home that Mr. LK’s uncle will be able to attend.
